  • They “find this an agreeable expense”?

They produced extra to account for it when they could leave, so it appears to me they at least understand that their current home comes at the cost of honey.

They have a choice in the matter?

They can and WILL leave if abused, so they very obviously do have a choice, yes.

Humans choose to place them in hives.

And if humans want them to produce honey, they’re going to have to give the bees ample opportunity to find a better home and leave.

  • They didn’t evolve it for us, no. The evidence just suggests to me that they find this an agreeable expense in exchange for a solid shelter guarded by a comparative titan. I don’t know exactly what parts of the deal they understand and what parts they like, but they clearly at least know to expect the honey tax.

  • I saw a post once that actually argued bees are aware of the arrangement and generally willingly tolerate the deal. We can tell they know the deal because they produce extra honey to account for the keeper’s cut, and we know they willingly tolerate it because if they found it intolerable, bees are perfectly capable of fucking right off and leaving you with an empty hive.

  • This is where conservatism always leads. There’s only one genuine ideal held by conservatives, and that’s that society should be hierarchical. While most general populace conservatives don’t realize it, it’s an inherently dishonest ideology because the real driving force is the wealthy who want to become an aristocratic class but realize nobody will just give them that, so they instead direct your attention toward attempts to put someone under you while they quietly elevate themselves. Everything else is just window dressing and distractions. Conservative leaders don’t give a shit about abortion or trans rights, but they do care about riling up their base to garner support over stupid shit and distract them from all the pillaging.

  • I stopped buying off eBay after I fell for a well made scam listing and they made it literally impossible to contact a human being so I had to file a charge back. Mind you, this was after they nuked the scammers account AFTER I paid for the order, so they knew they were scamming, didn’t reach out at all, and tried to make it impossible to do anything about it.

Fuck eBay. They know damn well they’ve got scammers, and more importantly, they’re perfectly happy to keep their cut after the scam is over. I’ll only buy off eBay as a last resort if I need it and can’t get it anywhere else.

I dont get the “someone elses problem” though. If the item is still perfectly usable then why would the next owner not also just want to use it? I personally value a hand me down that “served” my family for ages over “new thing”

Because eventually, inevitably, there can’t be a next owner and it becomes garbage. Then, you’re right back to contributing to plastics pollution because while you can say that

If it is broken then it can get a new life by getting recycled

The reality is that a huge portion of plastic doesn’t get recycled.

If items where durable, reliable, repairable. People will be more capable to perceive their value and be more concious about what happens to it after it breaks because losing it will hurt. Not quite like but somewhat similar to how we care about what happens to remains after death.

I think you’d need a massive cultural shift to make it plausible, not just different stuff. And while we should be recycling, I don’t think it’s the right emphasis right now because recycling is largely an attempt by the oil and plastics companies to put the onus on us for the environmental harm caused by their product. It’s an attempt to fabricate an excuse to produce things out of plastic that really don’t need to be, and we’ve fallen for it. Of course we should recycle all the plastic we use, but we still shouldn’t be using plastic anywhere we don’t have to. There’s a reason the saying is “reduce, reuse, recycle”. They’re in order of priority, and recycling is the last defense. We need to start by significantly reducing the amount of plastic we use.

Personally i think plastics are fine if the product is actually durable

My problem is this just kicks the can down the road. Some day, no matter what, that plastic is becoming waste. Maybe it gets recycled, but most likely, it doesn’t. If it doesn’t need to be plastic, it should not be plastic. Questioning if it’ll last long enough is just asking if it can last long enough to be someone else’s problem.
