Some business major over at Fridgey Fridges Ltd. thought, ‘Ooh la la, if we add €20 worth of electronics to these things, we can sell them for an extra €500 and when they break they’ll generate an extra €100/yr in service calls and parts.’ Then some business major at the grocery co. said, ‘wow, we’re going to get fridges that can connect to the internet. Now we won’t have to have Guy go check the temperatures. (which we already don’t do) I can convince my idiot boss this saves the company €100B and get a bigger bonus this quarter.’ Then the CEO says ‘look investors, we’ve put AI in our fridges to manage the temperature,’ and the share price flew up and gave him a giant bonus.
Never underestimate the ability of business majors to think the solution to a problem, which mightn’t really exist in the first place, is to pay someone else to automate it without regard for how badly it will break after they’ve moved on.

A little bit of everything I could manage within the space of the loop until I inevitably went mad because infinite repetition would destroy me just as it would anyone else.
Yeah, I’m with you on the direction to approach from, if slightly different in tack. I was just amusing myself. Hopefully I wasn’t causing you too much annoyance.
‘Undisturbed’ is doing a bit of lifting there. The same could be said of a person, generally speaking. Leave most people in a room, they won’t hurt anyone either. It’s just a matter of what circumstances make each dangerous. If you put bullets in a room and set the room on fire, they act as little bombs. If you do that with a person, it makes them less dangerous, because they’re dead. If you put a person in solitary confinement for years on end, they’ll come out mentally disturbed, and possibly violent. Do the same with a bullet, and it comes out presenting the same hazards as when it went in.
Just to have fun by being a bit pedantic, the a bullet is a possible source of toxic lead, and if you are using the colloquialist ‘bullet’ to mean a charged cartidge containing a bullet, the gunpowder charge makes it a tiny bomb, which can be dangerous as well, even without a gun, especially when exposed to idiots with hammers or fire.

Both. Sociality is not in comparison to an idealised ‘pro-social’ (as in seeking to empower or ‘improve’ society) individual. It is in comparison to other animals, like lions, which form social groups almost exclusively based on familial ties, or bears, which usually don’t come together except to mate, or salmon, which technically group up to spawn but are not forming social connections or even pair bonds.

Great. Now Trump is going to declare war on the nation of Africa.
It can technically be made to work, but it will be extremely hard. It’s combining two difficult to manage relationship dynamics into one VERY difficult one. Both people wanting an open relationship is only the bare minimum starting point. It takes a LOT more than that to even begin to make it work.

Disgusting. Automoderation is assinine. Robots don’t get to tell humans what to say.

It was not necessary. It was fucking stupid.
Emojis are for people who don’t know how to read/write the local language. No exceptions. That includes ‘native speakers’ of the language who use them. Emoji are a sign of illiteracy and people who use them were failed by their education.

It’s not about the location so much as the expectations and praticalities.
An ‘open relationship’ as a status requires a commitment from both people to maintain commitment to the relationship but allow casual sexual interactions outside of the relationship. That’s hard for a lot of, if not the large majority of, people, even when both people are in close proximity. If you take away the commitment element, it’s not a romantic relationship, it’s just casual or friend sex, which can be fine too, but has different expectations.
A traditional long-distance relationship also requires commitment. Ask anyone who has tried to have an LDR. It requires a HEAVY commitment, and a lot of every day effort to maintain the non-physical intimacy of the relationship over that distance. Are you ready to spend all day writing texts, call each other when you have a few moments at the same time just to hear each other’s voices, and spend all evening on the phone talking about the most pointless BS that happened that day just because you love hearing about each other’s BS? If you got the chance to go visit, but you were exhausted from working overtime and it would cost everything you got as extra from the overtime and then a bit more, would you drop everything just to go see them for one day?
These commitments, if they are going to withstand the difficulties of life, are usually on the order of ‘we will be getting married or entering a solemnified union of some kind but circumstances outside of our control make that impossible for now.’
If either of the people aren’t ready to commit to that level of dedication and permanence, the relationship, while possibly previously good, is not likely to be able to withstand the strain of each person’s needs and desires being deferred by the practical realities, again and again and again.
You have to ask yourselves, and each other, out loud, whether that level of commitment is there. If it’s not, it’s far healthier for everyone involved to say ‘This isn’t something to call a relationship. I won’t wait for you, and I don’t expect you to wait for me, but I’ll be super fucking happy to try again when we’re both living in the same place if we’re not monogamous with someone else.’
Maybe if you say something which isn’t sarcasm, I’d be more inclined to consider content. Form matters. I can tell you 3857+5298=9155, but if I say it while calling you a slur, you aren’t going to give a fraction of a fuck whether it’s true or not. Why would you expect the rest of the world to listen to you, much less trust you, when you don’t demonstrate even basic good will?
Without a commitment of some kind, that’s not a romantic relationship. That’s a non-binding letter of intent for a friends-with-benefits situation at a TBD date some time in the future with caveats and escape clauses. It’s about as much of a relationship as mutual swiping on tinder.
Why do some people think sarcasm suggests a superior opinion?
God, this shit is stupid.
Let me explain it one more time:
Violence is part of resistance, but acceptance of violence is part of fascism. One can be violent in a mission to change the world. It is undeniably a fast but chaotic and imprecise way to make change. However, it MUST make you an outcast. If you try to create a society where violence is accepted as a method of change, you won’t have a society when you are done. You will have a battledome. You don’t get to be the violent extremist and the hero of the people in anything but a fascist regime. Deal with it.

Roughly speaking, authoritarian/big-state communist. Very common on a certain subset of Lemmy instances.
