No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do companies that use AI for things like AI customer service representatives pay the AI company for its use ? It is a token based thing per call or just a weekly billing ?
91·4 days agoFrom personal anecdotal experience: chatting for hours would cost the company a few cents at most. In our company, developers are encouraged to try it out, and there are a few projects that use it a lot. The user with the highest cost has been using it in a loop, with minimal human intervention (and hence downtime), and it cost the company 2000 bucks for a month.
With “normal” use, even extensive, it’s very hard to go above 50 bucks.
I don’t know the company’s agreement with the provider - I’m guessing this is on top of a subscription cost - but either way if you want to make a real dent just chatting isn’t going to do it.

Games@lemmy.world•On the steam forums, there are over TWO THOUSAND PAGES of community questions about "disk write error".English
5·4 days agoYes OS errors can be vague, but no, you’re not going to just get “disk write error” for such disparate errors.
Do a search for “errno”, and specifically the POSIX error section. There are separate errors for “permission denied”, “device unavailable”, “bad file descriptor”, etc. Windows API calls have a whole host of their own error codes, plus functions to examine what’s going wrong specifically.
This is most likely caused by a higher layer in the code catching errors when it doesn’t know what to do with them, and then just showing a generic message.
If you’re being pedantic you should know how to spell pedantic.
That’s a myth. Farmers in the US lobbied against the change. Animals and crops don’t care about the time, so it just meant they had to start work earlier on the clock.
Wait, you guys switch from 2 to 1? We switch from 3 to 2. Also on a different weekend, but I knew that already. This one is new to me.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is "On your left" the best thing to say when passing someone on a trail?
3·7 days agoOne time I was riding to work, a group came from behind me and one of them started shouting “left left left”. We were just coming up to an intersection and I still don’t know what he meant: did he want to pass me on the left, did he mean to tell his group to turn left, or did he want me to go left?
Get a decent bell - not one of those little ting-ting ones that you can’t hear - and use it. A bell is always clear: someone wants to pass on the left (right in the UK).
Every time I use a language that doesn’t have operator overloading I wish I was using C++. It’s absolutely maddening to have to read and write things like “end.subtract(start)”.

Games@lemmy.world•Day 833 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playingEnglish
6·9 days agoI played the original Black Flag for the first time about two years before the remake came. I have been playing through all AC games in order (up to odyssey now).
At no point during my play through did I feel like the game needed a remake. Sure the graphics could be better on modern hardware, but they were beautiful as they were. The gameplay gripes that I had are all inherent to the AC franchise. There was, IMO, not nearly enough that could warrant a remake. And like I said this was my first time so it’s not nostalgia or rose tinted glasses.
AC1 on the other hand is lacking in a lot of areas - perhaps even too much for a remake, since it wouldn’t be “true to the original.”

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it "Their name is Trevor," or "Their names are Trevor" if you know 2 Trevors?
3·10 days agoMy interpretation: “their name is Trevor” is grammatically correct, but semantically means their collective name is Trevor, not that they’re both called Trevor.
“Their names are Trevor” is incomplete because the subject implies a plural while the object is singular. This could work if you were to list multiple names: “their names are Trevor and Trevor.”

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•This won't be controversial at all
502·17 days agoIt’s not controversial, it’s just wrong. Apple has always been more expensive. And it has always tried to block its users from knowing anything about the internals of computers. Part of their whole selling point was that it was easier to use. The way they went about it is IMO bad, but that’s a different discussion.
US Customary Units and Imperial Units are not 100% the same, so calling the former the American system makes sense.
I’ve honestly not seen any benefits over passwords.
If I want to check my mail on a library computer, I can type in a password and I’m in. If it’s using passkeys I need an already logged-in smartphone - which I probably don’t have if I need that library computer in the first place. That’s just one example.
I just signed an order it’s a great order everyone loves it it was a disgrace when they made Pluto not a planet everyone hated it a disgrace. So now everyone loves it a great planet it’s beautiful everyone loves it it’s called Planet of America it’sa great name for a great planet. It’s a big planet too everyone says a great name for a big planet Planet of America. Much bigger than any other planet in the world, it’s huge a huge planet Planet of America.
