The absurdity of the AI Overview getting confused by “are we getting” vs “is we getting” is hilarious. It just assumes you’re asking about a movie or package instead.

AI assumes if you use nonstandard grammar you’re looking for a handout from the government. In particular, the use of “Is we…?” is racist because this kind of use of a singular verb form with a plural pronoun/noun has historically been part of fictional stereotypical portrayals of Black American speech patterns, which are of course a big part of what it “knows” about Black people. AI doesn’t care if it’s realistic or caricature, and doesn’t realize the dearth of accurate portraits, so it then makes racist assumptions about the rest of the question.

We all know that the people getting the largest and most consistent handouts from the government are wealthy white people who use correct grammar. But they don’t ask AI, they speak directly to their personal politician.

TBF, my response to someone stating “are we getting” would have been quite similar.

Whereas my response to the broken English one would not have been not quite so polite while the AI one even has a minuscule chance to having actually answered the guy’s intended question.

So… in reality win for the AI?

It’s quite funny to see how humans will probably note the inherent judgement of this difference while AI don’t give a shit about your sensitivities and just infer whatever the hell they want.

It tells us more about ourselves than we are willing to admit.
