Because Schopenhauer was not talking about ethnicity at all, but about national pride:
“Aber jeder erbärmliche Tropf, der nichts in der Welt hat, darauf er stolz sein könnte, ergreift das letzte Mittel, auf die Nation, der er gerade angehört, stolz zu sein.”
(“But every pathetic wretch who has nothing in the world to be proud of resorts to the last resort: taking pride in the nation to which he happens to belong.”)
Well, I wouldn’t call his view pathetic, but perhaps slightly concerning.
Schopenhauer wasn’t exactly a fan of democracy, and things like the stuff given in the extended quote might well have been used by him to foster a strong state with an absolute (monarchistic) leader, as he favored it.
Ok, that’s a real shitpost.

Tbf both are pathetic

I don’t even do that.
And maybe that’s something to be actually proud of.
I dunno, I’m not sure I’m actually proud of anything in my life.
But he lived during time when states based on enthnic groups became a thing. We had feudal borders before that.
