JAXA, the Japanese space agency, has successfully launched a new mission this morning to the larger of Mars’ two moons, Phobos. It’s planned to deploy a small rover, and also to collect samples of material and launch them back to Earth for study here. Phobos is a lot smaller than our own Moon so the gravity is extremely weak. This makes a sample-return mission practical with a small spacecraft.
