  • Some men have told me I was crazy to pass up the “opportunity”. And some women have told me that I was a “gentleman” for doing so.

I don’t know why men are so awful sometimes. But I think a big part of the problem is that taking advantage of women is normal and accepted.

The term “rape culture” is often misunderstood, lampooned, etc. but that’s a really good distillation of it. SA is not “encouraged” in a legal sense, it’s punished, but there is a cultural expectation of men to be uncontrollably sexually aggressive while women are supposed to “defend their virtue”.

If men aren’t sufficiently sexually assertive, they are often seen as less masculine. This isn’t always the case - it can support the conception of masculinity as being chivalrous. But can also be viewed as being more passive, less virile, less strong, etc.

If women are perceived not successfully “defending their virtue”, it’s seen as a failure on their part except sometimes in extreme cases of sexual violence if seen as being “unprovoked”. Hence the “look what she was wearing”, “asking for it”, etc. etc. tropes. These are often less overt now, which causes people to overlook the extent to which they blame women for being victims of SA.

Rape culture - it’s defo a thing and that’s it.

  • Interestingly, normies who argue against nationalization of private property tend to say “commies want to nationalize my toothbrush”, etc. not understanding the difference between private property (data centers) and personal property (consumer-grade RAM, for instance).

So, funny enough, Altman is advocating for the cartoon villain version of communism where the centralized authority (Sam Altman) nationalizes your personal property (RAM).

Meanwhile, folks actually in favor of nationalization to reap the benefits of planned systems of production would not try to steal your RAM, but would take Altman’s datacenters for the public good.

  • Definitely not. It’d not been nearly as competitive, Musk and other republican donors would not have needed to donated $100M or whatever they’re up to now, and the Democrats would just do their normal thing (and lose)

But, it’s Paxton- the 2nd most corrupt politician in America - so they had to divert funds from other close races and grassroots donations for Talarico have broken records. And the Republicans are still (probably) going to lose.

  • “I wish she [Lange] hadn’t taken my picture. I can’t get a penny out of it. She didn’t ask my name. She said she wouldn’t sell the pictures. She said she’d send me a copy. She never did.”

While Thompson initially viewed the photo as a curse that froze her in her lowest moment of poverty, her children felt differently. They grew to be immensely proud of their mother, viewing the image as a monumental tribute to her resilience and the strength of a mother who sacrificed everything to keep her children alive.

In August 1983, Thompson suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with cancer, leaving her family with staggering medical bills they could not afford. Her children leveraged her late-in-life fame and issued a public appeal.

Recognizing the woman who had humanized the Great Depression for generations, the American public sent in over $110,000 in donations to cover her medical care. Thompson passed away a month later in September 1983 at the age of 80.

    Damn

  • Rectangle good, sure. But rectangle that gives no sense of time or place sad, I think.

I really like some architecture inspired by modernism. Huge FLW fan - fallingwater is my favorite building. But the good modernist or modernist-derived buildings incorporate and emphasize their surroundings and give a sense of time and place by incorporating traditional stylistic elements, local materials, etc.

Also, no pretending needed - this guy was a major progenitor of the style. The style can be a very good fit for the needs of people who commission buildings to be built, and it can look cool in its own right, but regardless of any of that Loos was a pioneering force in the Modernist movement

You can blame this guy: Adolf Loos, at least in part.

Major influence behind Modernism. He was mainly reacting against Art Nouveau which he was a staunch critic of.

“The evolution of culture marches with the elimination of ornament from useful objects” is the core theme of his essay “Ornamentation and Crime” .

    Basically,

    1. ornamentation causes buildings and useful objects to go out of style.

    2. Things that go out of style require materials and manpower to update.

    3. It is the moral imperative of the designer to make useful things, things that need to be redone are less useful and are wasteful.

    4. Therefore it is the moral imperative of the designer to remove all ornamentation from design.

He saw ornamentation as “degenerate” and equated ornamentlessnes with moral and intellectual development. He also made it a race thing. He used the example of people from Papua New Guinea having tattoos. Paraphrasing: “these primitive savages ornament themselves with tattoos, we enlightened europeans don’t. We smart, they dumb. Therefore ornament = dumb bad, no ornament = good smart. See?”

He was a major inspiration behind the modernist movement. It helped that unadorned buildings are cheaper and easier to construct - especially with the advent of cheap glass and steel construction. So you end up with this sort of soulless architecture that gives no sense of time or place - that tells you nothing about its purpose or the people who built/use it.

  • The “flying” tesla exists, though - there was a demo recently.

Now, it only has 1 seat, isn’t street legal, is being sold on an invitation only basis for an undisclosed price, and uses compressed air to “fly” so it can’t do so for any sustained period - so you won’t see what the meme describes.

Also the versions that are legal and actually would be sold at best have some jets of air on the back to make them go faster, but that costs like 250k USD.
