  • It’s not a spinoff. It’s the story-based groundwork for Star Citizen. It establishes the setting, and the events for the MMORPG.

It has been crowdfunded by all the contributions that went toward Star Citizen, because it contains all the same game systems and mechanics that the MMORPG will have. Except, for the MMORPG they’ll have to work more just to make sure these mechanics work when additional players are involved (network tech is difficult).

I wish them all the best, because quite frankly it’s the biggest crowdfunded title duo (Sq42 & SC) that we’ve ever had - being more than half of GTA 6 budget.

  • What is this thread even. Blocking an entire instance, because a single community member annoyed somebody? I mean, sure, go ahead…

ML simply happens to be the instance hosted by the developers of entire Lemmy, so they spend the bare minimum on post moderation, because they have the bigger picture to focus on.

Now the screenshots show that a “mod” took action. A “mod” can be literally anybody appointed by the current mods of a community. Anybody can create a community, just like on Reddit, so this could literal have been anybody. You’ll encounter similar bans on other instances in time as they grow too, because people are free to make sub-rules to their communities, essentially each “mod” having their little dictatorship.

  • Once you don’t need to overwork yourself just to get by, then there will be another problem to overcome. Work reform is not the only monster out there to tackle.

Namely, many modern states consider you their property:

    • conscripting you by force into the military,
    • forcing unreasonable taxation on you,
    • suppressing your “dangerous ideology”,

    … and so on.

Everything, because any of us as the individual doesn’t really matter to the “system” fronted by the politicians “we choose” and owned by the rich lobbyists. If you don’t agree to fight, then you’ll be tortured or imprisoned in a land that you probably don’t even personally care about. If you don’t pay the newly invented window tax, sausage tax, or whatever attempt to milk the common person, then they’ll make sure you’re miserable enough to fold for them.

The game was rigged from the start.

  • Discord is out there tripping itself over, quietly poking TeamSpeak “hey, maybe you could make a comeback to break our VoIP monopoly?”, meanwhile TS sits it out quietly developing at a snail’s pace.

Then we’ve got Stoat, Fluxer, and what’s not currently the trending obscure alternative (think like Guilded was too). They’re all too obscure, and most of time these apps are unsigned & lack notarisation so their code safety is a matter of “trust me” (a wise person doesn’t install random junk on their PC, regardless of it being FOSS or not - one rogue maintainer is enough to bring risk; unless they’ve gone even half as serious as Debian or other highly reputable FOSS). Adding to their obscurity, I doubt anybody is going to materialise new friends into existence by sheer willpower, will they?

Unless something happens that makes the casual Discorders jump off their platform, these hiccups are largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, they’re serious. No, they still won’t make people ditch Discord - at worst they’ll keep obscure platform XYZ for contacting friend group 1, and still use Discord for their daily communities and acquaintances who don’t keep up with any tech news (like privacy leaks) at all.

That’s just some food for thought, I’m not actually going to debate about what I wrote (no time for such things!) Nevertheless, I sincerely hope Discord flops over, and a bunch of better alternatives appears.

  • Population decline is fine. It’s the population boom driven by World War II panic that was the oddity instead.

In a matter of time, we might return to population levels from the 17th century, and if we do, then so what? A single individual will become all the more valuable, similar to how European nations valued labour more after the Black Death occurred. History likes to repeat itself, even if not necessarily by events like the plague.
