  • The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time to plant a tree is now

Your digital footprint is an extension of yourself and how much effort you put into it is up to you. In the same way we encourage people to not eat junk food made by shitty companies, we encourage people to manage their digital presence and support non-shitty companies.

But its hard to eat healthy in the same way its hard to set up accounts and tech that you control, its a concious effort. Do not let perfection be the enemy of progress, anything done to improve your footprint is progress in not feeding digital dragons.

  • I have, not in education (I have relatives who work in higher education and they claim as such, but both of these are anecdotes anyway) but the interview process. My work has struggled to hire anyone and its driving me bananas. They either get candidates who used AI to pass the non-technical phone screen and show up for the first interview clearly asking AI about industry standards and they flunk almost immediatly. The second group are full on tripple threats, they can sing, dance and act, but balk at the first talk of pay (my business daddy has not kept up with the competition in a narrow field, they can get a lot more across the street).

We are looking down the barrel of the last cohorts of classically trained professionals working through their careers, the world is about to be a much weirder and worse place because of [gestures broadly to everything] but mostly AI.

  • OP has a point, if a cult shows up at your door selling their beliefs, you can take the opportunity to do some deprogramming. A few of the basics:

    • Dont flat out deny interest, feign insterest and try and draw out their selling points.
    • Be polite, they need to not view you as a threat, offer them tea or something.
    • Attempt to address all questions or as much of the conversation to the younger of the pair (JW travel in pairs).

The point is to show that dispite being antithetical to their beliefs and not interested (your friendly neightborhood atheist) your not out to villify their group. They are trying to show the younger person that the world is out to get them, by doing the opposite, you break the illusion a little bit and are likely never going to see them again as they will not want to revisit the house talking about Kierkegaard.

  • Back when they started on that, we were worried they were going to kill ActivityPub like how Netscape got killed by IE durring the browser wars. EEE (Embrace, Expande, Eliminate), adopt the protocol, expand its capabilities while including propriatary portions of code, and lock the competition out when market saturation is achieved.

The issue is that fedivers residents are a bunch of tech-literate weirdos and called this bullshit the second the news dropped, and are 100% the type of people who make forks as soon as something like that would actually happen. Piefed being the perfect example, this part of the internet is perfectly fine just picking up their things and making something else (and we love it here for that).

  • Given the recent string of complex designs and the grading industry for sealing high value cards, I would imagine counterfiting them would be much harder. I view this more inline with the Italian chocolate thefts than a more complex enterprise. The product could be viewed as comodities, although they arnt consumed like food, but due to the random nature of the packs, the distributed contents wont be IDd or tagged (only the larger boxes/packs, which are meant to be broken). The reason food is the more likely target is that people will eat the evidence if you can fence a box of candy to a bunch of vendors who wont ask questions. This rings the same to me.
