The correct way to solve this is by stripping them from their power/money not by killing them.

I am really disturbed how fast and nonchalant people come up with murder of groups or single people they don’t like or have a grudge against. Killing people is always bad, always the wrong solution.

I really liked Starfield and I played it for about 250 hours, multiple new game plus runs and all. It is not a bad game, I liked the characters and the story and especially the world with its near future NASA-punk setting. And yes, such a setting means that most of space is boring and that travel between planets (or even stars) in real time would take ages, very boring ages with nothing other then darkness around them. So the gravity jump mechanic and the focus on events around planets was only logical.
The big problem that Starfield had was that so many people had the idea or the fantasy that Starfield would be a game that it a) never was and that b) Bethesda never said that it would be.
I play, and I mod and create mods for, games with versions of the creation engine for over 20 years now, I began with Morrowind back then, and I have a very good idea and understanding of how the engine works and where its powers and limitations are, maybe that’s why the picture that I had from the game was very close to what the game delivered (loading screens and all) and why I was able to had (and still have) so much fun with the game. There was no huge hype cliff based on wishes and imagination that I could fall down from.

There are dedicated indie publishers, this would not be possible when having a publisher renders a developer non-indie.
It was especially bad, and the first time where I had people outside of some nerdy bubbles talk about it, was it when the slop coded Photoshop clone went through the media. All the dumb “Adobe will be dead soon now that we have a perfect clone of their programs” talk.

So you think that every Linux application comes with it’s preconfigured cgroup configuration?
Well then, ok
What I hate with all this is that people see such slop and think that a perfect replica was created, with zero effort, by a single person in his bedroom. Had so many discussion with people about it, they don’t want to hear that such vibe coded things often only look good at a first glance but always have major flaws, issues and bugs.

Yes, that is one of the tools needed. But it is not helping with doing anything meaningful with cgroups. A cgroup without any kind of specific configuration is almost as good as no cgroup at all. That’s what I meant with the hard part.
And I did say that systemd makes it stupidly easy, in contrast to the normal easy that cgroups often are.

Yes and as I said there is no way to limit the network bandwidth, as far as I know, but limiting the speed that the tool can write to the storage device oftentimes limits the speed of retrieval also.
Kind of a indirect speed limit for the download, as a workaround.

Ok and now tell me how to use cgroups for a random binary, anything that has not buildin cgroups support. That’s were it gets complicated and where systemd can help a lot
You are using a tool where someone else has solved the hard part to show that no hard part exists in the first place.

It is possible to limit the bandwidth for writing on the storage device with systemd-run, but not to limit the network bandwidth used by the programm (as far as I know)
The property for I/O bandwidth would be IOWriteBandwidthMax https://www.man7.org/linux/man-pages/man5/systemd.resource-control.5.html
The commandline option to use it with is --property= https://www.man7.org/linux/man-pages/man1/systemd-run.1.html

But to be fair, systemd makes using cgroups stupidly easy

A high number of cheese types can be eaten by people with lactose intolerance because the process of creating cheese reduces lactose a lot or even completely.
One could argument that Mussolini as the inventor of the word fascism knows best what he wanted to say with it, but at the same time do words and meanings change with time so… Complicated
Why Mussolini said it comes from it’s roots as a leftish political orientation and is quite good explained by reading the whole Wikipedia article to this topic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_fascism

I am lazy and have it in my autostart. But maybe I should change that, if I think about it

Two SMB issues, showing again that it was a really stupid idea to put a network filesystem/filesharing that belongs into userspace in the kernel.

Just go somewhere el… Oh wait, it is fucked everywhere!!!

Compilers are not always deterministic, there is a lot of “smart” code in compilers to automatically optimize code and that can mean that whole parts or functions are replaced with what the compiler thinks is best.

For me vapes and cigarettes are exactly the same in grossness, but I dislike vapes more because vapers often ignore laws and regulations against smoking in public or passive smoking, way more often then cigarette smokers do. And they are way more aggressive when asked to obey the laws.
A pedantic person could say that solar families are not renewable too, because solars are using the energy of a giant fusion reactor that has a limited, non-renewable amount of fuel to use. Luckily I am not that pedantic 🤓
