At this point it’s spam I’d say.

All right, all right … we got it the first time!

It a nice toy.but not having a touchscreen on a laptop is not a deal-breaker for me, other than low-resolution screens (everything below roughly 200 DPI).

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Updated Google privacy policy says your Gmail might be used for advertising
9·11 days agoThe only solution is to treat the Gmail address like the address you get from your ISP: Do not use it as your main address, and only use it to communicate with the service.
My Gmail address only exists in the Google universe. Only Google uses it to contact me and send me information and spam.
The only thing I did is setting up a forwarding rule to forward all mails to my actual mail address where I filter and sort the mails, so I don’t need to manually check Gmail but get preprocessed information only.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux kernel devs drop obligatory confession of AI tool usage
1·20 days agoIf people are hurt enough, they will push towards it.
While I totally disagree with both, there are distributions without systemd and there are NEW projects that keep X11 alive and shun Wayland.
Something like this could happen with the Kernel. I’m not the one doing it because while I dislike Linus’ pro-slop stance I don’t really care enough for actively working on something like that…
But if available I’d install it instead of the slop Kernel.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux kernel devs drop obligatory confession of AI tool usage
107·20 days agoSoftware that’s “just a tool” can lock you down and out of what you can do with it.
AI is not “just a tool”. It is highly unethical.
It harms the environment, it harms actual developers, it introduces all sorts of legal issues where copyright is only one of them, it locks you in to a vendor, it makes you dependent of giant tech companies that steal your data and want to monetize your work.
Linus seems to ignore that or does not care about it.

2016·20 days agoFuck.
Let’s hope for a slop-free fork or the old man changing his mind on this bullshit.
My desktop computer monitor is a 28 inch 4K screen, so yes, it is on the upper end of the median screen size, I guess. I ran Hyprland on my laptop (13 inch 1080p) for some time but I like my environment harmonized, so I use the same configuration there, too.
For easier management I make use of labwc’s areas and snapping feature to have windows proportionally the same size on both screens. The areas use percentages by default, which makes it quite easy. I have top, bottom, left, and right, the four corner quarters and two different center regions.
On my laptop I usually only use the center region for the browser.
Using Waybar I have a detailed clock and a sound widget on bottom right corner of my screen, and left of that is space for “systray” icons.
My windows have a title bar, that show the icon and title, and a close button.
No task bar or other navigation elements on the screen or the windows.
I make heavy use of Alt+Drag actions for resizing moving windows around and constantly have windows rolled up so only the title bar is showing. I never minimize windows and rarely use fullscreen.
For accessing applications in a convenient way I use the root menu on desktop rightclick and the client menu on middleclick.
The whole setup is fully customized and built from ground up to be as least annoying and intrusive as possible.

This is basically my setup since ca. 15-20 years now. Started with Openbox on Debian and since 2008 Arch Linux, and around 2-3 years ago I switched over to labwc on Wayland which allowed me to re-create what I used on Openbox.
So it’s open core now? As if this would be any better.

I hate everything about “modern design” … Rounded corners, gradients, blur and transparency effects, fading in/out … fuck that! I want my browser to look and feel like the rest of my UI.

It got my GPU wrong, it got my CPU cores wrong, it got my connection type wrong, it got my location wrong and it causes my Firefox to freeze.
