  • I’d like to see a cop show that applies that level of writing to guns.

A: What can you tell me about the bullet you recovered from the victim?

B: It’s a handgun round, caliber 9x19 inch, solid steel frangible hollow-point. Fired with a muzzle velocity of 100 joules, one of these can punch through an inch of hardened RHA like wet toilet paper.

A: 100 joules?! Jesus Christ, that’s enough to kill someone!

B: Exactly. This is the kind of bullet only a professional would use. Thankfully the firing pin left an imprint on the bullet; if we can find the shop that sold the gun they can tell us who fired it.

A: Only one shop in LA carries weapons that powerful. Let’s go.

  • A small AAA pocket flashlight with a magnetic base comes in handy surprisingly often and can be clipped into a tiny jeans pocket for carrying. You can even use it from there if it’s angled.

You’re not going to save the day with it but it’s pretty neat to have on hand. (That’s pretty much as far as EDC goes for me.)

  • You mean the party that has made numerous inquiries on matters of state security, including supply routes, for no apparent reason? The party that has essentially permanent representation in Moscow? The party that actively campaigns for voters with a Russian immigration background, to the point of making Russian-language ads? The party that has officially maintained the position that Russia should keep Crimea ever since the first invasion?

Yeah, no surprise they’re kissing daddy Putin’s feet yet again.

  • I guess it’s covered by 5., but the real, actual reason we can’t have trains is the civil engineering firms can’t extract infinite money from a completed railway.

Actually, they kinda can. Railroad tracks need upkeep just like roads do. Maybe not to the same degree and maybe the costs work out differently but they do need to be maintained. So there’s plenty of opportunity to grift the hell out of a railroad buildout.

  • It also doesn’t help that ACPI is a badly-designed mess of a standard. I remember that in the 2010s one of Apple’s selling points was that their laptops had sleep and hibernation that worked every time. Heck, MacOS X could even decide intelligently when to do which. This mostly worked because they fully controlled the hardware, firmware, and software. Other laptop manufacturers could just take their best stab at implementing ACPI power states and hope their implementation matched Microsoft’s.

Microsoft tried to solve the mess by introducing the S0ix ACPI state (aka “Modern Standby”), which was defined in a way that could actually be implemented without too much guesswork. Unfortunately, this was during the Windows 8 era when Microsoft decided that laptops should be more like smartphones so S0ix is much closer to turning your screen off on a phone than to actual standby.

The system randomly waking up and deciding to do work is an explicitly intended feature because what if you get a Teams message while your laptop is in your bag? Sure, you might say that you’d either have Teams on your phone or wouldn’t immediately care but that kind of thinking won’t get you anywhere within Microsoft. Also, Windows actually has very little restraint about what it does when it wakes up so it might decide to install a heavy update or an application might decide it’s important enough to do work right now. While the laptop is in your bag. Cue you wondering if the laptop turned off because the battery’s empty or because it overheated.

And to make things worse Microsoft specified that in order to be allowed to use Modern Standby, the device must not offer S3 (sleep/suspend-to-ram). Some manufacturers still allow you to enable S3 but it’s a legacy feature that’s even less well supported than before.

  • So the repetitions of “something is terribly wrong” that start mid-sentence are intended that way? Sorry for suspecting an LLM; it does kinda feel like the output of an early (or badly misconfigured) LLM getting stuck on a token. Wouldn’t be the first time LLMs have cribbed someone’s style.

Damn those LLMs, they’ve even managed to ruin random internet bullshit! shakes fist at cloud computing
