  • This is a broad question, but here is my experience with someone on the other end of the political spectrum. We were coworkers for a few weeks. I found out that they aligned themselved with the alt right party in my country, and it bothered me a lot. But with help I also realized that they weren’t dangerous and mostly frustrated by german politics - fair! - and willfully uninformed.

On the last day we worked together I mentioned that I was really nervous/upset about an appointment I had in the afternoon, and they were caring. As I left work they wished me the best for the appointment. This is the last impression I had of them and I found that really sweet. People are more than their political beliefs. We may not subscribe to everything they think is right, but I find that as long as it actively doesn’t harm us to be kind, we should be. Avoiding someone and being upset also takes energy.

And I believe the individual needs understanding and compassion when discussing politics. As long as the person isn’t a threat to others, and as long as you find their company neutral or even good, I think this is the way to go.

  • This reminds me of my bachelor where I looked into scientific worldviews and pitched them against religios worldviews. What follows isn’t really a weakness of science, but a point that stuck with me.

More specificly, the value of science in times of crisis vs. religion in times of crisis. Science of course is very good at offering helpful advice, inform decisionmaking, and lower risks of anyone getting harmed if aplicable. What Religion on the other hand does well is taking care of emotional needs, since it offers a framework of understanding that illivates giref and guilt. I read a paper on islam providing the possibility that a loved one who has died from the plague would go to ‘heaven’. (The paper was about the plague and the reaction in Islam to that catastrophe). So that was one worry taken care of. My firend, familymember died, but I know that they are with Allah. So that is comforting. Also, religion provides community. There are communities that are very tightly knit, due to regular meetings at the church, meaning that there may be someone to talk to, when you face an issue you’d like help with.

I am not aware of Scientific centers creating intimate bonds as religion supposedly does. I do not take part in either as I am not a scientis, nor an avid believer.
