  • Well, we wish we were happier, thinner and fitter
We wish we weren’t losers and liars and quitters
We want something more not just nasty and bitter
We want something real not just hash tags and Twitter

It’s the meaning of life and it’s streamed live on YouTube
But I bet Gangnam Style will still get more views
We’re scared of drowning, flying and shooters
But we’re all slowly dying in front of fucking computers

So sing, sing at the top of your voice
Oh, love without fear in your heart
Can you feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can scare away the dark

  • I am not vegan, but I’m open minded and in favor of reduced consumption. I’ve tried several meat substitutes and enjoyed some. I keep a package of Beyond Beef burger patties in my freezer and eat them regularly. I’m looking forward to trying the lab-grown salmon when it reaches my area. I eat meat-free meals at least three times per week (I know that’s not a lot, but my background is meat with every meal, so… one step at a time).

I’m saying all of this because I feel the need to preemptively defend the following:

Every version of vegan “cheese” I’ve ever tried was bloody awful and in no way an acceptable substitute for actual cheese. The best you could say about it was that it was vaguely the consistency and similar in mass to an equivalent amount of cheese. The flavor, smell, texture, and behavior (e.g. capacity to melt or be thinly sliced, shredded or grated) were all wrong. I have a distinct memory of eating a bagel with vegan cream cheese, which both tasted and felt like glue paste. It had as much in common with actual cream cheese as did the paper the bagel was wrapped in.

  • "Look, it’s simple. I’ve got PiHole running my DNS service from a Podman container on a Raspbian VM hosted on ProxMox running bare-metal on a 10-year-old laptop with a broken screen. The laptop is my service host but it doesn’t have much storage, so I have a desktop built around an old AM3 motherboard with a stack of random old hard drives running TrueNAS as a file server, which everything else uses as a NAS. The laptop only has one ethernet port, so I’ve got a PCIe network card in the desktop so it can also run OPNSense, which provides routing and firewall for everything else on the network. That’s also connected to a Ubiquiti POE switch with two WAPs to provide WiFi.

See? simple. But I forgot to give the guest VLAN trunk access, and I forgot my login for OPNSense, and to fix it I’d have to reset it and then reconfigure all the network addressing, so that’s why your phone can’t get to the internet on my WiFi."
