  • it’s absolutely possible to reduce the number of tries to hits to a manageable level for a distributed botnet that can’t easily be blocked.

This is very hard for me to imagine. Even if the people running the website are incredibly incompetent, they would have to be intentionally moronic about passkey generation for what you are envisioning to be realistic. You are right that passkeys enable brute forcing on a scale regular passwords don’t, but it doesn’t matter, because normal passkeys are just too long for this to be a worry.

  • And if the site is hacked, they can get a lot of information about how the passkeys

I don’t like passkeys, but this is not a real worry, unless the service you are using is ran by idiots. I mean to say that knowing how passkeys are generated is typically not helpful in guessing your passkey. There are more interesting questions where security fumbles, like is your data encrypted on the provider side & is that encryption tied to your passkey or not, often not, since they want to mine your data.

  • I don’t know about other normal people, but I’m certainly actively maintaining my own vibecoded apps as long as it’s affordable to do so. By that I mean they give me the niche functionality I want & new features are not added anymore, but if a pillow or pyqt update breaks my app, I may figure out how to fix it even on my own.

  • Understanding how things work a little will make using Ai assistance much more reliable. If you have 0 knowledge & you are just pasting terminal commands without comprehending anything even a little bit is not really tenable long term, but I suppose if you plan to reinstall annually, it could be okay, given a mistake doesn’t wipe your drive.

  • Awful use of ChatGPT, yes. Though in a perfect world where intentional bias could not exist, then it could be good for people that are lazy to do their own research to summarize the life, past policy decisions & promises of the candidates in an easily digestible form. In that hypothetical world could be better than still going to the polls without knowing anything, like so many people do.

I actually asked ChatGPT out of curiosity about James Talarico vs. Ken Paxton & it cherry picked things that were really said by KP, but are bullshit from a republican. Then again looking at Talarico’s side makes me waver if there is intentional bias at all, but overall it still feels like both candidates are shown in a relatively good light, with KP obviously gaining more.

Just the fact that ChatGPT and other LLMs are resistant to say bad things about politicians in general makes the results inherently biased & potentially very damaging.

  • I don’t get the hate Cosmic gets. The only mistake they made is that they released the first non-testing version of their new DE too soon.

Cosmic is the only full DE with usable tiling out of the box & tiling is superior, full stop. If I had to use a DE again I would probably use Cosmic. Even if we ignore tiling & focus on the floating experience, even today it’s better than Gnome without extensions, it’s not even close.

The Linux community has an oddly selective memory. Everyone remembers when Ubuntu had Amazon’s crap preinstalled, but now that Plasma 6.x is actually good everyone is conveniently forgetting how incredibly bad KDE 5 had been for most of its run, like so bad that it’s hard to put it into words. Cosmic is much better than Plasma 5.x & it’s getting better.

(though I do think excluding the use of Ai tools in a climate where all web browsers & operating systems are accepting LLM contributions is a wee bit strange & largely political)
