The last 5-10 years have been primarily reacting to buyers (and choosing not to market sedans more) but there was a specific concerted push to change market opinions toward SUVs and SUV-like vehicles, so I’m inclined to instead blame marketing with a healthy sprinkling of availability.

The last time I bought a sedan I really had to go out of my way to find the only one on the lot that happened to be in my budget and in my desired age/mileage/mechanical shape, and I happened to test drive all 5 sedans that they had on that lot. If I were indifferent towards the body/chasis style I probably never would’ve looked at the sedans just by pure math of there being easily a hundred or more SUVs, a smattering of trucks and vans and that was about it

  • This is exactly what I’ve been thinking about the whole satellite internet constellations that are getting launched. If governments required interoperability and open access to any network of…say 10 or more satellites we wouldn’t have 3 or 4 or 5 incompatible swarms of thousands of satellites crowding low earth orbit and threatening kessler syndrome. We could setup one global satellite internet solution and have competition on the ground for who your connection goes through while it all operates on shared infrastructure.

And instead of taking an approach to actually help fix the problem the EU is just making it worse by encouraging yet another incompatible constellation of hundreds or thousands of satellites to make LEO even more crowded?!

People stopped buying sedans because the car industry made a concerted effort to demarket them. They’ve been pushing SUVs for nearly 30 years, trying really hard to get people to stop buying sedans and were too successful. Now there’s a fuel crisis and no sedans in production (from American brands at least) so the manufacturers are getting caught with their pants down again

I do wonder if the fleet market is sufficient to keep both sedans and vans in production, since each makes a very competent fleet vehicle platform for different usecases, see the venerable Crown Victoria for example

  • There’s another layer of joke to the meme that Midwesterners would rather drive 20 hours than go through all of the trouble of flying or taking a train.

Granted I’ve mostly encountered that sentiment outside of the large cities where to fly or take the train would also involve driving for 2-4 hours then figuring out long term parking and then transfer all of your stuff for the train/flight, endure all of the delays of taking a plane/train and then there’s a solid chance the destination is also car centric as heck so then you have to borrow/rent a car at the destination, and rapidly the cost both monetarily and in time starts making a lot of sense to road trip
