Privacy@lemmy.ml•How do I convince normies to protect their privacy?
661·16 days agoHere’s the thing: You don’t. You can’t. There are no magic words to make someone see things your way. You can give them ideas to mull over, but you can’t convince someone who doesn’t want to be convinced. You can be open, express your views and give your reasons to anyone willing to listen, but that is the extent of what you can do. Some people may eventually come to you for advice; welcome them and guide them as you can. Most people may take some bits from you but never start actually caring. That’s ok, that’s their way.
You can’t force people to do things your way, nor should you try. Just be honest.
How can we evaluate whether you should be proud of it if you don’t even post pics?

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•AI researchers are taking up smoking because they expect AI to cure cancer, "as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI", Palantir CTO tells CBS News' "Face the Nation"English
13·19 days agoWhat utter crock of shit. How is he not embarrassed to say something so inane publicly? Is he so empty? No matter how much money you fill your suit with won’t ever make you feel human.
Cancer is not one disease, dipshits. There is no single cure.

7·21 days agoJesus, the man’s malignant narcissism knows no bounds. The delusion on display is staggering. I can’t even imagine the depth of dysfunction it takes to do the things he does, then say something this insane with complete seriousness. I’d laugh at the absurdity, but this isn’t funny. He’s a clown with nuclear codes. What little solace there is comes from the fact that to be this narcissistic, you have to experience extreme levels of self-loathing. All the nasty things he throws at others are accusations his mind throws at him 24/7. His is a miserable existence.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What's your favorite linux os you suggest to beginners who wish to learn linux?
1·24 days agoIf you want to learn Linux, install Gentoo. That’ll give you a pretty good understanding of what’s going on. It’ll be an intense process though.
If you just want to install and use Linux, pick one of the usual suspects: Mint, Fedora, openSUSE Leap/Slowroll, whatever. If you come from Windows, picking KDE Plasma as your desktop environment (DE) is a good choice. Mint’s Cinnamon should be good too. Picking a popular distro usually means troubleshooting is easier, since someone else out there most likely has the same issue you have, and documentation is more comprehensive.
Remember that many distros provide a live environment you can run from a USB stick. Try a couple with different DEs and see what fits your needs. Honestly, the distro doesn’t matter that much, they all do the same thing, more or less. Maybe try to pick your DE first and then just go from there.
If you want a simple answer, pick Mint.
And how. I hate it. Watterson was/is a very perceptive man.

No matter how I look at it, this will only hurt their user base. Where are they going to get new users? I’m no tech billionaire, but I struggle to see how this benefits the site in the long term. Even if they revert later, the damage will already be done and the site will lose any relevance it once may have had.
I’m not interested in Reddit per se, just curious why they’d think this is a good idea.
