The rules and norms of writing are not the same as laws. Either contribute something meaningful or fuck off.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI godfather Geoffrey Hinton: ‘We’re creating alien beings. I’m willing to be selfish and choose humans’English
1·6 days agoMaybe its changed since I’ve been in grade/high school over 15 years ago, but I dont really recall anything about Babbage in my history classes or programming electives.
My history classes focused mostly the major ancient civilizations, and US history from the colonial 1600s to the civil rights act and moon landing 1960s. The history of computation and computer science is very lacking here in the US.
Most of my knowledge of the important computer science people comes initially from Numberphile and Computerphile. Almost every one of those names I’ve pulled in my previous came from having to google stuff like influential woman computer scientists.
Besides elsewhere in this thread is someone literally saying none of the names I’ve mentioned were anywhere in their AI research curriculum for university.
You need to know the rules to know how to break them with intention.

2·7 days agoEven going back to Margaret Hamilton, the entire field of Software Engineering which she functionally created at NASA is basically a tech tree prerequisite to modern AI.

4·7 days agoHonestly I’d even be surprised if people knew Ada Lovelace. Most people dont even know Charles Babbage who laid out the analytical machine she wrote her programs for.
Unless they’re already on that broadly nerdy Lemmy/Reddit style of fun facts that get shared quite frequently.

4·7 days agoMargaret Boden, Karen Spärk Jones, Pamela McCorduck, Ruzena Bajczy, Janice Lourie.
All women heavily involved with ai research in the 1960s that laid foundations for ai and all fields of computer science.

Def not a bot
I should, and did, appreciated!
I did misread that
Except when that author is explicitly saying the money she makes is going directly to anti-trans hategroups. Its the same reason I dont get Chic Fil A, they actively fund anti-LGBT hategroups.
Edit: I misread! Although one thing to point out, she could leave instructions for her estate to continue funding anti-trans groups after ghe event of her death.
Lovecraft was possibly the only instance where it legitimately was fear driving his xenophobia and not hatred. The man was completely and irrationally terrified of everything from air conditioners to mathematics that wasnt on a 2d plane to black people and eventually learned later in life that what scared him previously wasn’t actually scary.
He also wasn’t a billionaire actively throwing his money and notoriety behind hate groups specifically swaying legislation and public opinion to bring harm to people.

1·15 days agoBut hospital execs are gonna go “see it worked for acne, let’s try other stuff.”
Oh I love my syrup fridge cold. But I also recognize im weird like that
I like the cold syrup on my breakfast stuff, its more viscous and creates a nice hot/cold heterogeneity.

Ok theres 2 replies about Cormac McCarthy, there’s clearly something I’m missing contextwise about understanding rules and how to break them.
