  • The gap may be huge morally but it’s very narrow in practice. The problem is that general purpose includes any purpose, including murder. It’s rather different from airborne drones because it can be much stealthier and can simply move into position in advance, wait in silence and strike without warning and like drones it is effectively disposable so there would be very little form of effective defense against such tactics deployed at scale, but qualitative differences like that aren’t really the main point we should be concerned about. The point is, we cannot ignore the extreme, profound danger these technologies pose to the protection and continued functioning of human civilization simply because it is not designed for it. It may be too late to stop it completely, but that’s absolutely no excuse for leaving it unchecked and allowing it to run rampant.

Nuclear weapons technology never stopped developing, but as humans, we all agreed it was too dangerous to let proliferate freely, and we have kept it in check and so far managed to avoid annihilating ourselves with it. It may not be the greatest success story, but it is the best we’ve been able to do, and there’s no reason not to keep trying, if the alternative is annihilation, and I believe in both cases it is.

  • If only it were that easy, if you do that, the managers will be grateful certainly, but they will also endlessly demand more proof and validation that the system is now completely safe from certain doom until they feel comfortable, which is never. In a lot of cases it’s simply easier to convince them that the system was never vulnerable to certain doom in the first place, because you were of course already 5 steps ahead of this even in the planning stages, and for some reason they have an easier time accepting that, as long as they still have every reason to believe you are a brilliant tech god who would never personally fall victim to such a common vulnerability. I suppose it’s really less about the reality of the situation and more about what kind of corporate image you are cultivating and maintaining for yourself.

  • while staff were transporting a replica of the Eisenhower globe

So like, is it a replica of an Eisenhower globe or is it an Eisenhower globe? I feel like that is a pretty significant asterisk here, and kind of significantly changes the narrative. Someone’s lying, and as a matter of principle I’m inclined to believe it’s Hegseth, but I’d like to know what’s actually broken. I don’t give a shit if Hegseth breaks his own toys, and if he broke a replica that can be replaced. But he seems to be the only one claiming this is a “replica”, as far as anyone else seems to know, including plaques installed at the globe’s original location this appears to be an actual globe used by Eisenhower, not a replica.

  • because if it’s voluntary, no one would confess.

You’re technically correct, but practically wrong. See, a reasonable and logical person would not do that, but people using AI to slop things together aren’t reasonable people, they have very little critical thinking skills and their brains are mostly cooked, they are often happy to openly admit they used AI, if not downright preemptively defensive about it. It is all us stupid people who don’t like their slop that are wrong, not them, and they want to make sure we know it and know what we’re missing out on for being such stupid backwards luddites.

  • I mean, that’s literally Accenture’s default business model (same as almost any consulting/professional services company), so it shouldn’t be surprising. My point is that it’s not an indictment of AI, and their AI usage isn’t actually going to go down; it’s just Accenture doing Accenture things. They’re not a charity, they’re not using AI for fun, they’re using it to make profit, and they make profit by charging their customers for every cent of AI they use on their behalf, usually with a hefty markup, in addition to everything and anything else they can justify charging against their customer’s accounts. It’s a very profitable business model, and I’m sure they love using AI for it and will continue using AI just as heavily if not even more in the future.
