Technology@lemmy.world•The 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 got another ‘unavoidable’ RAM price hikeEnglish
3·2 days agoI suppose it would be good for a large number of mostly idle services. Nextcloud, home assistant, a few other containers. Things that don’t do much except for brief periods, but still need to be running. Add in a zfs or btrfs filesystem and some of those operations will use a lot of ram.
I certainty wouldn’t go that route, I’ve found that 2-4GB in an SBC more than meets the purposes I use them for. I also don’t think I’m willing to run off a microsd anymore now that I’ve discovered emmc and ufs boards.

531·5 days agoThis isn’t necessarily true. You can have your AI machine doing other things or turn it off when you aren’t using it. It could probably increase efficiency if people were affected by how much energy it uses to write their emails, they might only use it for when they actually need it.

3·18 days agoThis is pretty much my experience so far, audio quality is mid but better than I’d expect from earbuds. I wish they’d just charge when they are in their slot instead of needing to close the case, it’s just weird requiring that the case be closed. The app is pretty terrible, but it isn’t required and doesn’t do much anyway. Touch controls are similar to what I’ve experienced with all the other touch control buds I’ve used, with better control over volume. The noise canceling works, but isn’t amazing. I’d like a little more battery life, but I’m happy to sacrifice that for being able to replace the battery when I need to rather than throwing them out. I wish they had a zero delay mode as I can notice it when watching videos, but it’s not a big of a delay as others with a delay.

It’s just a bare 100mah battery and inverter. it’s a setup half built for camping so it was never intended to work as a ups. I’ve just got quick at dragging it out of the garage and plugging my server ups into it.
I can get a battery/inverter set up in about 10 minutes that’ll last from dusk until bedtime that’ll run my entire server and network and TV.
The trouble is that the power usually comes back as soon as I switch the inverter on.

8·19 days agoWelcome to the other side. I highly recommend checking man pages when looking up commands to start getting a feel for how to use them, also I recommend getting tealdeer (TLDR, get it?) It’s a TLDR of man pages that shows you how a package is usually used. I’ve often found that it bridges a syntax gap that is often missed in man pages.
Learning how to navigate and use man pages saved my ass when I was screwing around with my network.
I’ll give up on technology before becoming dependent on the cloud. I’m set with what I have now for at least a decade, I’ll downsize down to my last RPi or equivalent if I can’t get components.
I brought my 23 year old IBM x31 back to life last year just to see if I could, and it’s happy to be dragged kicking and screaming until 2031, when I’m pretty sure it’ll no longer be supported in the Linux kernel. I’ll do it with the rest of my devices if I have to while cannibalizing components to keep others going.
I can probably completely disconnect my network from the internet and live happily on the services I have running and my library card.

1·22 days agoYes but at least I understood my slop when I wrote it.
I agree with the image thing, I’m taking courses that require a lot of screenshots to be put into documents and it’s a bit annoying to do. Although, I get the feeling that it’s difficult because the goal is to give you more control and consistent results, rather than to “be easy”. I’ve had a ton of difficulty dealing with Microsoft office and images as well, but that is usually after the image is in there and I want to fine tune it. Also, I can grab an odt file from 15 years ago and it’s laid out exactly the same as when I first made it, I can’t open up a docx from two years ago without word messing up some part of the formatting.

Good thing it’s a blog, not an article
