The many people that can’t afford living out of their parents’ basement
I wonder, if we apply the strictest rule of “100 years after the death of the last co-author” for the work to enter the public domain worldwide in all jurisdictions (as some have life + 50, 70, and the longest is up to 100), how long do we have to wait to remix Metropolis with no legal repercussions? 71 years to go, more or less?

I’ve been trying my best to wean myself off commercial entertainment for the last ten years or so. A boring life, yes, and refusing most hobbies out of ethical principle makes it extremely hard to make friends, but at least I’m mentally prepared to go live as a hermit in the middle of nowhere when push comes to shove
What the scientific literature knows technically as a M.L.E.M.
At the very least until January, sure, but if the stars align well he can kiss the presidency goodbye sometime next year
Turns out they’re expanding to the Republican public in the US, nice
Well… community checks out, again

For instance, a server will probably work just right with an Intel N150 processor - decent power, low consumption, and support to encode up to VP9/HEVC (no AV1 though)
I’ll be honest, with the prices of RAM and storage nowadays, it’s not an ideal moment to start self-hosting. Given that you already have 3.5’’ drives, I suggest going for a NAS form if you can afford it. Also, a multiple app server with Nextcloud won’t work well unless the system has 8 GB RAM at the minimum, preferably 16. Try getting a more modern processor, as those come with support to encode more recent video formats and you mentioned having a media server.

Just added it for future-proofing because, let’s be honest, this WILL happen again.

You’ll see how much software, even software that is free and open-source, still has one legal or ethical gotcha or another.

Just read the documentation of Hyperbola GNU+BSD and you’ll be outraged at the world at large for a good while

Considering my sister’s dog is very much not a shelter pet, I’ll try to see if my country carries pumpkin puree specifically for dogs. And my sister is doing all she can to discipline it out of her
I wonder if an old toot of mine inspired this one

Personally, I veered all the opposite way - now I avoid entertainment in general out of ethical principle, save for very counted exceptions, because 1. people are generally easy to corrupt, so even someone generally regarded as clean can get cancelled at any point in the future, and 2. the entertainment industry has made it their modus operandi to never separate the art from the artist, therefore making the industry in general more and more morally corrupt. And since checking every single individual credit on every single individual work of entertainment in order to avoid supporting immoral people is prohibitively time-consuming, it has become stochastically immoral to have fun. Most people refuse to accept it though, and that’s precisely on what the industry counts to keep things under wraps for as long as possible.
Yeah, outside of their parents’ basement
