Technology@lemmy.world•Xbox wants you to pay 24 to 40 cents per hour to stream games you already bought: Time-based a la carte charges come on top of the purchase price for the games themselves.English
24·2 days agoI’m not arguing that Microsoft is some saint or that they’ve done nothing wrong. This just seems like a dumb reason to get mad at them. If you buy a digital game from Microsoft and have an internet connection solid enough to stream the game, you likely have the bandwidth to download the game.
You can still buy Xbox games on disc (I sometimes buy discount games used that I missed the first time around). And I read recently that signs are pointing to the next Xbox also having a disc drive for games.
I’m with you on private/rented servers for sure. I still remember all the hoopla about support for dedicated/private servers vanishing the first time around.

525·2 days agoMicrosoft wants to charge for providing a service? That seems completely fair. Streaming a game isn’t free for them.

Linux@programming.dev•Linus Torvalds Working On A Hefty Linux Kernel Improvement With Claude Code
2·10 days agoHating one thing just because you hate another thing sounds completely irrational.
If A creates B, and A is worthy of hate, it’s not necessarily irrational to hate B as well. Context is important; in some cases, hating B would be irrational, in others it would be logical. Your point is too absolute to be correct.
In the specific context of the use of LLMs, it can be perfectly fair to condemn the existence and use of Claude, Copilot, ChatGPT, Grok, etc. because of the harm their billionaire owners and investors are causing to the world, even if the LLMs aren’t otherwise necessarily bad.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Realistically, what do people plan to do on the Moon and Mars that requires a permanent, or long term human presence there?
1·27 days agoMining the moon to send materials to Earth would not be economical in the slightest because the Moon has nothing Earth doesn’t. Sure, space launches from the Moon would be way easier and cheaper than from Earth (once you make the massive investment of time and money to build the space launch facilities on the Moon). But if you’re talking about shipping materials to Earth from the Moon, either you need to send your freighters back from Earth to the Moon (expensive), or you make the freighters on the Moon and disassemble them on Earth, counting them as part of the haul. All that for iron, silicon, aluminum, magnesium, and titanium, stuff we can get on Earth easily enough.
The only possible economic argument for Moon mining is for a self-sustaining lunar settlement able to source space launch materials locally instead of getting them from an expensive rocket from Earth. That way, you can use the Moon as a jumping-off point to the rest of the solar system and beyond. That’s a great idea for space exploration in the long term for sure. But it’s a very long term plan and won’t be economically feasible for a century at least.
One could make the argument that mining Earth is contributing to planetary pollution and generally fucking up our ecosystem. That’s true for sure. I’m pretty sure implementing clean mining practices would be more economical than the cost of lunar mining (and that’s not even accounting for the pollution caused by the freighters’ reentry).

0·28 days agoThere really isn’t that much money to be made mining the moon, though. Not considering how much it would cost to get a mining operation there.
I honestly wasn’t aware of other platforms that stream games for free. A quick web search tells me that Sony offers cloud streaming as part of Playstation Plus Premium, Steam lets you stream from your PC to other devices. I couldn’t findany other cloud game streaming services that don’t require a charge or subscription; would you point me in the right direction please?
