  • Think of it like email. We don’t exactly worry about degradification of email. Instead we have to worry about gmail, or proton mail, etc becoming awful.

In the same way, it’s less that Lemmy might go downhill, more that maybe individual instances could. In which case, there are various degrees of how to avoid an instance. Leave, unsubscribe, block, defederate, etc.

For example, Meta created Threads and tried for a while to integrate with Mastodon. But Mastodon is still pretty much the same afaik. Many instances defederated from it, other people just ignored it, some people I’m sure were happy to communicate with a wider crowd.

Of course, the idea breaks down in a couple ways. Communities and communication on ActivityPub isn’t really the same as email. But mainly, email is kinda bad these days because of big actors, bad actors, and just ubiquity. Not sure how to prevent automated spam from clogging up every communication channel.

I think the name was confusing, but it really only exasperated more fundamental issues. The product wasn’t that appealing for most people.

The gamepad was a cool trick, but ultimately not being portable made it seem sorta pointless? I mean, that’s cool that you can play it while someone else watches TV. But all the nifty ideas around asymmetric multiplayer or supplemental touchscreen controls/displays just come across as gimmicks. The gamepad was big and clunky and near permanently paired to one system (and within a few feet).

Third party support was never strong there, and the bits that were withdrew almost immediately. Nintendo themselves were struggling to put games out quickly, with the transition to HD, plus their studios’ attention divided into making 3DS games.

The system was no powerhouse, so by the time other next-gen consoles released, it looked left behind. Unlike the Wii or the Switch, it didn’t have an especially compelling gimmick or pricepoint to make up for that.

(I say this as a Nintendo nerd that had and loved the Wii U, just my impressions of how others perceived it.)

I think the name was bad, but I also don’t think its failure is as simple as just that.

  • Review to understand, not necessarily to find problems. If you do find bugs and anti-patterns along the way, great, ask about them. But consider it your goal to learn what they did, why they did it this way.

When you’re giving feedback, phrase things as questions most of the time. Idk about you, but I’m rarely so sure of myself. If you’re saying stuff like “Would it work better if we tried xyz?” instead of “Change this to do xyz.”, people respond better. Sometimes it starts a discussion, sometimes you learn they had a good reason for what they did in the first place.

It’ll be really tempting to skim and just give it a quick Looks Good To Me. Try not to.

  • The GoW Ragnarok collector’s edition was apparently 200 w/ the digital game, this box is 150 without a game. Adjusting for the fact that the world sucks and everything costs more, seems about right to say they’re not charging for the missing game? (Tho I’d still say both are overpriced.)

I wouldn’t want a digital copy of a game, but I know many people would. That’s the upside, is that people can buy whichever version of the game they want separate from the extras.

Steelbook is a weird one to exclude, and I can understand the frustration if that’s something you want and they’re not making one.

  • Even if there’s not a PC version, it works out better to let buyers choose disc or digital for themselves (assuming this game gets a physical release, which I don’t know if it will).

I don’t think splitting the trinkets from the game is so bad, unless this merch box is priced like there’s a game in it. I mean broadly, more modular options are good.

Edit: Quick search says the game is supposed to get a disc. So yeah, I’d say selling the collector items separate from the game is probably for the better.

  • It is a little hard to see any actually happening, but I could imagine several scenarios:

    • AI helping smaller scale actors build stronger tools of destruction

If it didn’t take nation-state level resources to build a nuke-level threat, easy to see how a few wackos could end us all. Could be bombs with less materials, bio-weapons, grey goo, whatever.

    • Cyber security breaches enacting MAD

Presumably existing nuclear arsenals are well secured, but doesn’t seem beyond belief to imagine a hole that a persistent bot swarm could crack open.

    • AI in hardware

We’re a ways away from sticking frontier models into small computers, but the push for robots is there. Once they have bodies in the real world, the limits are off for what harm they can cause. All the same unintended cyber attacks we’re getting from test environments now will then become physical harm, and with enough resources you could see it getting dire.

Typing those out though, does make me see how farfetch’d they kind of are. Which is good! I’d be all for it if the doomsday stuff turns out to be a big nothing.

  • It’s not exactly the same, but I do feel like it’s almost always worse in the console side these days (excepting Nintendo here).

On console you’re juggling patches and updates, installing to drive, you have concerns about whether games will play well on non-pro versions of the system, Xbox is traditionally hostile to physical media while PS is ending it.

If you’re going to install digital games and download updates, worry about compatibility, might as well play on PC. Those issues are less on console, but present on both.

Meanwhile most games are getting PC ports (since modern consoles are very PC like and games need the extra sales), you’re not as locked down to a single store, you have more room to upgrade incrementally (in theory). Operating system is also in favor of PC.

Ease of use I’d still grant that consoles have advantage, sure.

I don’t argue all this to put down consoles, I love consoles and played only/mostly on consoles for many years. But I think there’s a lot of truth to saying modern PS and Xbox have moved so close to PC that they’re losing the pros and embracing the same cons.
