I think it’s more a case of douchebag billionaire and/or nepobaby has an idea and nobody around them wants to sabotage their own career by pointing out how stupid it is.
It also doesn’t help that the AI psychosis hit Sweeney harder than most.

Yeah, tbh it’d be pretty immoral if someone gets lead poisoning just because they shot up an elementary school. Big Gun really needs to be taken to court over this scandal.

basically 99% of all art revenue goes to 1% of artists, while the bottom 50% of artists get basically 0% of the income.
99% of what art revenue? There isn’t a global “art account” that gets divided among anyone who calls themselves an artist. Individuals earn what they earn.
The people pumping out mainstream movies are obviously going to earn more than those doing furry porn commissions on the fediverse.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying necessarily, but I feel like you’re giving Microsoft too much credit here. There are anti virus solutions on Linux. This isn’t a thing they’re doing because they see an unserved market and a new way to make money. This is a thing they’re doing to get a foot in the door with orgs that are switching away from Microsoft products to Linux (like many EU orgs recently), so they can try and draw them back into a 365 subscription or whatever.
So, yes, some businesses may need an anti virus solution due to contractual stupid reasons, but that isn’t what makes Defender on Linux “sensible” for anyone except for the Microsoft salesperson.

At least it’s accurately named. “Microsoft Defender” is designed to defend Microsoft from competitors. All those EU orgs switching to Linux are now just one short sales call to the right idiot away from falling back into Microsoft’s ecosystem.

There is absolutely no evidence that he actually submitted any kernel code written by an LLM.
The person you replied to never made such a claim.
Does it make you feel better to turn the truth into a cartoon with no nuance and obvious villains?

No, it’s just an app that serves as an alternative youtube frontend.

What a shame.

We have to face the fact that soon enough, any type of software question will be over.
What’s a “software question?”

I think you/that article are overthinking it. Compiling just means turning source code (written/readable by humans) into machine code (aka a program/game). “Decompiling” is the reverse of that, where you turn machine code into source code.
A lot of these AI de/re/comp/port/whatever projects are made by script kiddies/morons who don’t know what they’re doing. Sometimes you see them claim that a project is a “static recompilation”, but when you look at the code it’s literally just a bespoke emulator that runs the game.
Which is to say, don’t get too hung up on these terms, since they’re often misused either way.

I think that’s a very interesting point about the compiler, companies have really leaned on that as a way to obfuscate code, some folks seem to think compiled is as good as encrypted? Just another lock on the door, I guess, and a free one at that.
Well, (depending on the language) compilation is a 100% lossy conversion. So when a game gets ‘decompiled’ with an LLM like this, they’re not restoring the original code. It’s just generating new code with the same behavior, which is functionally the same. People doing this generally wasn’t considered infringement, but it’s clear that having a machine automate it is a big problem. Even if we ignore the fact that the output of an LLM is legally tainted/grey area, the scale at which it can happen now means we need new laws to deal with it.
This is basically doing to software what the internet did to piracy. That led to the DMCA, which as shitty and corrupt as it is, at least succeeds at some of its main goals.

I’ve always wanted Copyright to go away, but it’s going away in a way different than anything I’d imagined and I don’t know what to think about that.
It’s interesting seeing all the people who used to complain about copyright now realizing that copyright does in fact protect small artists, and it’s actually the reason why anyone was able to make a living as an artist at all.
On the one hand, it’s good that everyone is starting to get on the same page, but it sucks that things always have to get worse before they get better. This is a good opportunity to perform some introspection and think about what kind of mistakes led you to the wrong conclusion on this issue. Maybe it’ll be constructive and helpful for other issues.

Or better yet, use Grayjay. That’ll block the ads, and prevent Google from spying on you.

famously
C++ is one of the most memed languages in computing history. The number of people who have an “opinion” on it is far, far larger than the number of people who actually work with it (or have ever worked with it…or any programming language).
My comment was kind of a joke, but not really. It’s ancient history at this point, but there some not-super-solid arguments as to why the kernel bans C++.

Yes, and the people doing mental gymnastics to defend it are unprincipled losers and/or cucks to the billionaires.
The models used to generate code were built by stealing from us. Fuck whatever stupid opinions you might have on copyright; you were exploited. Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman, etc are making money, corrupting our democracy, and destroying our way of life because they stole our work. They wouldn’t be able to do that without the massive theft of labor they’ve committed, or if our government actually enforced the laws that they broke, and are currently still breaking.
Why should these scumbags (or anyone) be able to steal and profit from our labor? Are we going to accept our assigned roles as mere cattle for the megacriminals? Will you be happy when your daughter is conscripted as a “breeder” for Elon Musk? Or when your son dies fighting in a war for resources so we can build more data centers?
Or how about when the subsidized tokens run out, you can’t afford to use the models you’ve become unable to function without, and are forced to go work in an Amazon warehouse or copper mine or some shit because you eagerly and enthusiastically contributed to the monopolization of your own labor, and were too stupid to realize it before it was too late?

I feel like this could have been avoided if Torvalds had allowed himself to use C++, instead of suffering the ritualistic pains and frustrations of C for an entire career.
Anyone would lose their love of the craft after that. AI isn’t how you find it again, and it makes me sad to see. Not sad in a depressed/AI doomerism way, but sad in a “the people I looked up to are old and washed up now” way.

There are a lot out there in C++ land, and I’m sure C has a lot too. You can’t really go wrong with any if them tbh, just check if it has a lot of stars and go for it. I’ve used microprofile before and it served me well. You can view live data from an embedded webserver.
Perfetto is a powerful one from Google, but I’ve never used it.
Also, don’t overlook gprof. That works via auto instrumentation done by the compiler, so it’ll give you the most detailed look at performance with zero work from you (besides interpreting the sometimes massive amount of info)
Incorrect. “Slop” is anything generated by AI.
