help-circle
  • Lol, I think it would just be us in that community. The venn diagram of sewing machine operators (in the industrial sense) and people that are on Lemmy is almost two separate circles… That being said, I’ve often wished for a community or forum for us. Somewhere to show off our projects or ask for advice. Really, somewhere for all of us in the industry. The composites people, electricians, systems, welders even. I’ve got a group chat with some of the guys from my apprenticeship and we all do different things but it’s fun to see the stuff we find on boats, and we can ask each other for help if a project gets into what the others know. Which they do since a boat is a holistic thing, your projects are never in isolation.

The school I was working at (where I did my apprentiship) did have a forum, but no one used it so it got scrapped. I think the venn diagram from above alao works for the industry in general. A lot of older folks that can’t be bothered to be online like that.

And windows are fun! They look so nice with the mitered corners when they’re done.

  • Oh!! I think it is you! Thats hilarious! Can’t agree more on the patterning, that’s where you have to get it right otherwise you’re screwed later. I will absolutely make a crap one first! I promise! I can’t use the old one anyways, it’s got holes and had new windows put in twice so it’s all stretched out. We’re building a hard bimini so the side panels will be all new, though they are flat so easier. Also I have made those before, but a long time ago.

See you in a few years!

  • Heeeeey! Nice to meet ya! There’s at least three of us, I was talking with a guy that does canvas in Ontario a few years ago haha. I’d imagine there’s more of us from the industry if you’d include all the areas like composites and mechanics, but sewing is definitely the niche of a niche industry.

I never seriously got into canvas, wasn’t trained to sew anything with frames, just the stuff that goes with sails like covers and UV. Though I’m going to be making a dodger and enclosure for my own boat eventually, eek. I was on the sailmaking/rigging/splicing side of things. I applaud your skills, canvas is an art!

  • Oh thats lovely, thank you for posting! Not often I see my trade in art. If you’re curious, the reason it’s tied up like that is to tension the luff for sewing. The luff is the edge of the mainsail that attaches to the mast. The luff rope is made from three strand rope that stretches when it is under load. So when you sew the sail to it, it needs to be under tension/load for the cloth to be flat when it’s hoisted. You can see the rope sewn to the edge where it trails down the post.

It really does look like that even now, though maybe with not so many people lol. The artist has done a masterful job of depicting the scope of the job, the amount of fabric, the folds of the cloth. I’m going to get a print made for sure!
