Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your favorite quasi-drug-but-not-drug recreational substances?
10·10 days agoStaying up until 1 to 2 am. I feel more creative in the evening, but in the night, I don’t have the energy to commit to a vision, so I just kind of imagine a few different things poorly

Programming@programming.dev•Encapsulation: keyword encapsulation isn't the same as hiding a decision
1·14 days agoI’m just a student; the way I was taught, getters and setters are for when it is reasonable that getting or setting something might require some kind of hooks in the future, for calculating something derived, or converting the type, or maybe something with a database in it. I agree though, introducing getters and setters without that is stupid.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I have discovered that people I agree with implicitly value knowledge and transparency.
5·18 days agosorry, by ignorance I meant actually forgetting about it, or never knowing in the first place, which I say is hard to do, not the other kind of ignorance which I would summarize as maladapting to the information that i have, for example not caring about it. Basically I sometimes think of misinformation or stereotypes or whatever as a cognitohazard, which isn’t actually ever helpful.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you manage to study when you don’t want to?
3·19 days agoI do this self story thing by telling myself a) solving certain kinds of math problems is fun so I want to have more fun, b) learning what other people have discovered is a good prerequisite for discovering something yourself, and wouldn’t that be cool; also it feels like discovering something itself, because before not know after do know.

1·19 days ago- I need to consciously preplan unpleasant parts of the task so I can do them. Either because they require planning to do them pleasantly or because they are unpleasant to me because of low efficiency or other reasons (running the Simulation software that makes me feel bad for my CPU to slowly test hypotheses about my program). So I write down (in a text file) what I am going to do next. This felt like it got me slightly more motivated.
- If the Textbook is not engaging to read, I just skip forward to the exercises, then look up what I need for each.
- I felt significantly better recently after telling myself that each day has a part where I don’t need to do the task that I don’t like, and stop expecting myself to totally frontload it, because then I just feel stressed for a few days and backload it instead.
- The guy who said that you should think about motivation instead of technique might be onto something a little bit, because these strategies I have for myself fix something about my brain: having enough context to start or concrete things to do to keep going. They also feel like they are ADHD coping strategies, but I don’t actually know if I have it.
