Capitalism has always sounded great in theory,
I dunno, “People who don’t do the work get rich” sounds kind of shitty.
People use the word “capitalism” to mean different things.
If you ask someone “Should someone who doesn’t do any work get money from people who do?”, a lot of people would say no. And they’d probably think you’re talking about welfare or communism. But that’s capitalism. The guy who “owns” the company can sit at home and watch netflix while all his office workers make stuff, and he keeps the profits. If you frame it right, you can get people to agree with you or suffer some cognitive dissonance.
But none of that is what some people are thinking of when they think capitalism. They think “free markets” and “competition”. They often don’t really think about how that trends towards monopolies or cartels. Either because of magic, or “the government will prevent monopolies.” But not too much regulation. There’s got to be a few decades of suffering before an intervention, typically.
There’s also a lot of binary thinking. Either capitalism, or total state ownership and oppression.

Work Reform@lemmy.world•We work 40+ hours a week and they tell us we can’t afford insulin for our neighbors, but we can always afford another war
16·4 days agoI bring it up a lot but the book “dying of whiteness” was a horrifying look into this. A significant amount of people don’t want national health care, even if it means they themselves get sick and die, because then those people would get it.
The money facts don’t matter. It’s just emotional sludge.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some of your favorite lines from song lyrics?
3·4 days agoI often find it’s hard to really capture lyrics just writing them out.
"The weather never really matterered it was just something there was to talk about
We fall into patterns and habits and there’s not much we can do about that
Rearrange the room again I want to live somewhere as small as i feel when i fall asleep or wake up"
Little known band joyride! is a consistent favorite of mine.

0·7 days agoMillions of dollars spent to replace status messages and what slack/teams already do. There’s no mechanism to keep it in sync with reality so it’s not even especially accurate.
A real stretch to call that efficient.

tumblr@lemmy.world•You don't know what you've got till it's gone
0·7 days agoI knew a guy that worked at a company that had something like that. You had to walk your snes-style sprite around the virtual office. If you walked up to someone’s avatar you could start a meeting. You could move your guy around to indicate you were at lunch or working or whatever.
Seems extremely wasteful to me but a lot of people there liked it.
