  • Another thing about that interview: he continually uses Algoma Steel’s shutdown of its old furnace and the accompanying loss of jobs in an attempt to justify his actions . . . but they’ve been planning to shut that furnace down since the Biden administration (they built a new, less-polluting electric arc furnace that doesn’t require as many personnel to replace it). The tariffs moved the timetable up by a year, but those jobs were always going to go away, and everyone (including the union) knew it. The workers had time to plan and received some supports to retrain or find a new job. Completely different situation from Stelco. So anything he says about that is just blowing smoke.

  • I don’t think there’s a simple one-size-fits-all answer for everyone here.

What the majority of people with mental illness need is better treatment options. That they don’t have to pay for out-of-pocket because the government doesn’t fund it, or travel for hours in order to access. Fixing this is, to be honest, more important than extending MAID beyond serious physical conditions at the moment, and would help more people. But it’s expensive and difficult.

On the gripping hand, there is such a thing as treatment-resistant mental illness. If someone has tried everything, and nothing works, and there are no new treatments on the horizon, then denying them the only relief possible is cruel. This small percentage of mentally ill people should be permitted access to MAID, after due consideration of their medical history.

  • Which likely require very specific conditions to trigger and are not being actively exploited by anyone. “A potential issue exists” and “I have no issues (because my use case does not overlap with that potential issue and so the code involved is never called)” are not mutually exclusive. I’ve had no issues personally with X either, even though I know it has bugs—it’s non-trivial software, so of course it does. Wayland does too. It’s just that there are fewer people who get their jollies from pointing them out.

If Wayland works for you, go ahead and use it, but kindly don’t spend your time calling out people who don’t share your preferences. It’s both offensive and tiresome.

  • Um, no. There are many other categories of people who have issues with self-checkouts. Like anyone who’s legally or by the store’s rules due a discount or tax waiver (people with Indigenous status aren’t required to pay sales taxes in some jurisdictions, for instance), since the software often fails to account for these. Anyone paying cash. Anyone who knows anything at all about UI design or has wrestled with a self-checkout that just doesn’t function properly.

I’ll wait in line rather than deal with a machine that’s broken by design, thanks. Fortunately, the stores around here mostly have reasonable staffing practices, so the wait isn’t long unless some idiot tries to price-match against a flyer or something else weird and unusual.
