News@lemmy.world•Consumer apprehension grows as US retailers adopt AI-assisted pricing toolsEnglish
37·2 days agoIf it’s really “AI-assisted” it’s gonna be fun when it malfunctions. Will the store honor that pricing when the steak rings up for a penny?
You’re already paying for everyone else’s healthcare. Medicare for all would just make it cheaper and simpler.
What do you think happens when somebody walks into a hospital with no insurance? Do they just turn them away? No. Who do you think pays for that? You do. It’s paid for in the markup of your hospital bill.

3·10 days agoIn the states, I’m surprised that we haven’t installed combo parking meter/chargers along the curbs. Seems like they’d pay for themselves pretty quickly, and you could incentivize EVs by charging a fee only for filling up while parked.

Technology@lemmy.world•Walmart Running Into Trouble as Its Super-Expensive Robots Can’t Handle the Realities of Warehouse Work: It's an automation "arms race."English
232·10 days agoRobots can work well in warehouses. Amazon’s have been a success, for example. This just sounds like whomever WalMart hired to design this didn’t know what they were doing and Walmart got screwed. Maybe they tried to automate the wrong tasks, or leaned too heavily on the sales pitch of “AI magic” rather than understanding what they were buying.
The article also mentions Kroger’s failed dive into automation. From what I can find online, the automation worked, but it was a flop because it was expensive and underutilized — it wasn’t worth the money spent because it was focused on filling online orders that dried up.
