  • I just dont understand why they would do this? Putting so shitty key is like they wanted to make it as insecure as possible. Even if the ones responsible were criminally stupid, they still should have understood that this is like leaving the whole thing unlocked.

And for such critical thing. Imagine if this wasnt discovered like this but instead by some competent malicious actor that had resources to coordinate some large scale attack and kept it hidden until just the right moment when they can strike at everything.

I also dont understand how little outrage there even is about this, we were really close to huge catastrophe. Or maybe i have misunderstood the severity of what happened.

  • I want steam to have competition, steam being monopoly is scary as then it might turn bad one day. but epic doesnt want to compete. They try everything else but trying to make better product. And its pretty clear their ultimate goal is to be monopoly themselves by doing what they can to drive steam out of business but they fortunately keep failing because they cant comprehend why people prefer steam over their crappy things.

At least something good came out of them now, but that was likely just a fluke. If it wasnt then its good and hopefully they continue to goad steam to become better.

But I wish there was some service that tried to take steam on by doing better than they are doing.

  • The scale of the attack doesnt seem like it was meant to cause problem with food suppily. While it was somewhat far reaching, it was still that one storechain. I think it was either test to gauge the response, some gray hacker exposing pretty horrible level of security in a way that cant be ignored or some random asshole causing problems because they can. Only benefit i can think of for state level actor would be to use this as distraction to something else.

With security level that shitty, it could easily have been just some random asshole causing problems for no reason at all. Doesnt take state level hacker to break into system where username is admin and password is just date of current day…

Good thing the storechain didnt get any money from insurance. maybe they and others will learn their lesson from amount of money lost. Imagine if every store has this shitty security and someone coordinated an attack on everywhere at the same time. What bad level of security does is it widens who is able to break into there. (state level actors would be able to break into almost anywhere that is civilian level security, i think. Some random mid tier hacker might not)

  • comparing steam and epic is kind of like comparing good restauraunt to some seedy fast food place where cook sometimes spits in the food out of spite and you always get dirty plates.

Epics “free games” thing reminds me of a candy van. You gain more by staying away as who knows what the launcher does on your computer, they do have to make their money from somewhere and selling harvested user information would be quite neat way to make some money as a final fuck you if they start to go under. There is probably a reason they dont seem to care about making better platform.
