  • The elephants foot is the name for the melted core at Chernobyl, its relevance is that the siege equipment in question is the Chernobyl containment facility (which was built to the side and then rolled over the entire reactor building because you can’t build in place with all the radiation trying to kill you).

So, containment facility is an interesting siege weapon, including the elephants foot turns it into a nuclear attrocity in a big box, rather different vibe.

  • I do agree that condensing an encyclopedia to a limited size and keeping the most significant information was a very difficult art that was performed admirably by the old encyclopaedias.

I however think it’s an art that would be innappropriate and harmful if applied to Wikipedia.

Just because you can condense the information doesn’t mean you should. Encyclopaedias are not for reading through, so limited length was an artificial limitation imposed by the printed format not for any good reason.

I’m sure there’s articles that go on a bit about irrelevant minutia, and they should be trimmed, but that’s an article specific flaw.

FWIW I think I misremembered the accuracy point, looks like most studies have put it similar or slightly lower accuracy. Citation needed I guess.

Not everyone is a purist. Lots of the more open minded religious types are willing to entertain the possibility that their god cares more about people living a good life rather than selecting the right religion. Those types are fully compatible with a multicultural society. Often they’ll play lip service to fit in with the more extreme religious nuts, but the fact they can coexist happily is proof their views are more nuanced.

I’m fine with anyone who is fine with anyone who is fine with anyone.

And yet if everyone always voted for the superior party by any clear metric, eventually that metric would become policy for both parties.

Like, the only reason both sides suck so badly is that the American public is so bad at voting for the better party. If the dems won a few times in a row the republicans would realign to suit the new reality, and then maybe they’d have to compete with each other on questions like corporate control and militarism, instead of the shitshow we have now.

Not saying the 2 party system is good (it’s not, it slows down realignment when the parties are out of whack with the public and encourages partisanship), but it’s not the only reason American politics is a mess. Maybe not even the biggest at this point.

  • Either would work, my example has the advantage of being true ( Einstein’s greatest mistake, according to him).

To be clear, I’m not arguing that social science is as legitimate as astonomy. Only that all the bad social science doesn’t invalidate the entire field, it is possible to do good social sciense (just sadly quite rare, for various reasons)
