Anubis is the duct taped patchwork of preventions keeping the endless thousands of bots per minute from hitting our servers.

I went from thousands of requests per minute to 10, tops. Bot prevention is a must have.
If bot checks were removed then everyone would be complaining that it’s unusably slow.

In the last year I’ve seen my management go from “you have unlimited AI caps, use it as much as possible” to “actually now you have a very low cap, please use it when you feel like it’s necessary”. The real disruption has been to productivity, ironically enough, because the rules of my job keep changing.
These pretzels: are making me thirsty?! I love it!

3 1/2 years here, and I feel like I have pretty honest takes but of course ymmv.
Moderation can be hit or miss depending on the community. Some have a heavy hand, others are light. Some have rules like no discussing AI and can lead to a ban, gaming has a rule I keep forgetting of it’s really a “gaming news” community and you’ll have posts removed that are just about gaming, etc. Long story short, always read the sidebar rules before posting, and don’t take it personally if a post is removed. Check to see if there’s another community that your post may fit better in. There are some jerk mods, but we make fun of them at !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com
As for topics, I mean you’re with a bunch of star trek/linux nerds here, just like reddit early platform adopters are tinkerers and nerds so you’ll notice a lot of conversations will eventually point towards those topics. There is more virtue signalling here, no matter what you’re going to have someone tell you you shouldn’t even mention X or Y and you’re horrible for it. Just tune them out, or argue, whatever you want. Have confidence in what you post.
The cool thing is we’re small enough where you can get to know people here, you’ll see similar usernames every once in a while and it feels like an actual community. It’s also small enough where you can have an impact if you choose to. A lot of people come and say “We don’t have X community”. That’s where you get to make that community if you want, and grow it to something cool. I’ve found that there are people here interested in the niche things, but most are too afraid to build a community around it. We have !fedigrow@lemmy.zip if that’s something you would like help with.

Is diversity freaking gone?? That was the entire point!

I understand your pain, all too well

Trust them to require a paragraph of reasoning around every if statement

Dudes not in Italy anymore. In Italy they do that shit all the time, but it’s their home, and if I’m visiting I’m the guest and will order on menu and follow their insane food rules.
Outside though? You don’t own the restaurant, you have no say. The correct option was to quit.

So it’s going to fail and they’re going to blame Graphene

I dislike this only because algorithm has a bad name now. New is an algorithm. Top is an algorithm. Hot and active are both more complex algorithms.
You don’t want personalized algorithms or tracking.
I know it’s pedantic and words change over time but after taking the class on Algorithms it just bugs me. Any math equation is an algorithm.

Same with the Simpsons Michael Jackson episode, 30 Rock and It’s Always Sunny also had black face jokes that ironically were meant to make the viewer feel extremely uncomfortable and realize how racist the character was being that are now gone.
Whether you agree with the jokes/premise or not, I believe we shouldn’t pretend like none of that happened. To me that makes it worse. The fact that we feel so uncomfortable with it now proves that we are marching forward, and that doesn’t mean we blindly hide from our mistakes. I like what WB did with Looney Tunes, they put a disclaimer warning that it was there, and that it was from it’s time, and that to remove it would mean removing the evidence of how far we’ve come.

I run mine behind a VPN just to be safe, and even then Google still tries to throttle/rate limit as much as they can - but it’s important enough to me that it’s still worth trying

It only takes a couple of times to realize how quickly something you care about can be taken away and you’ll never see/hear it again. Netflix brought on such convenience. I remember I watched Scrubs front to back multiple times, until one day I was told that it was leaving and suddenly I couldn’t watch it anymore.
Youtubers and creators come and go, if there is something you care about it’s on you to preserve it. No one else will.
I wish there was a legal way for me to create a “backup” version for others to watch like a PeerTube instance, but to creators they would see it as not fair to them, so unfortunately my collection remains private.

You’ll find most things posted here are not paid :)
Personally I use TubeArchivist

In a gold rush, sell shovels.

That’s fine, but why do they keep announcing release dates?! Seriously. Marketing teams. Shut the hell up. No one wants your made up business marketing dates.
If they want to have dates, I want to see the senior engineer with 10 old cups of coffee and the bags under their eyes tell the camera when it’ll be done. That’s the date I’ll trust

They think it’s some brilliant scheme against big tech, when really it’s so obvious that they’re just going to tack the tax onto the users bill. French Netflix users will now have a “usage tax” on every bill, guaranteed.
It’s exactly the same thinking as the tarriffs. They think businesses will eat that cost and protect the customers? BS they will they’ll pass it on down.

So many reasons. The company is American and it is holding value for Americans, so it’s beholden to the SEC and a thousand compliance laws in the US.
Crypto as you know it is anonymous, but exchanges to operate in the US have so much scrutiny and compliance. They’ve had Id verification for years.
So in this case yes, it was the largest heist on currency in history, and a massive chunk was Americans’. I’d be shocked if they didn’t investigate.
Not to mention if it’s happening with crypto, it’s happening g with standard banks too. Not investigating would leave everyone else vulnerable to it.
Hey look, that’s my mom to a T. All you need now is 10 years later her angry and confused why I don’t share intimate details about my life with her.
