Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What sort of things do y'all monitor with Grafana / Beszel / etc.?English
1·5 days agoI already had influxdb+grafana setup, so it was easy to pump data to, plus I was able to then match it up with cpu temps and such from my Kubernetes nodes. I like having all my data in one place.
That said, Tasmota has native Matter support and I now have a few ESP32’s controlling sockets, lights, etc., that integrate with Home Assistant.

4·5 days agoI found a pack of 5 on Amazon for $20, for each of the sensors and the esp32’s… so $40 for 5. Probably cheaper in Ali or similar. The only negative is they need some calibration. The ones from Adafruit are better quality and already calibrated, but much more expensive.

6·5 days agoI have a series of Tasmota esp32’s with Temp/Humidity/Barometric Pressure sensors around the house, attic, garage and outside. I scrape it into influxdb and have a Grafana dashboard setup.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•"Clapping fans in the background" a USA-only thing?
99·6 days agoI know you asked for non-USA opinions, but as someone from the USA, I have always thought this was weird. Not only are they either fake or paid or self-centered extreme fans, but they got to sign away their “show up on TV and photos” rights, all for the privilege of looking at Trump’s ass while he speaks. Worst seat in the house.

Technology@lemmy.world•U.S. suspends Microsoft, Adobe from green card labor program in foreign worker crackdownEnglish
25·9 days agoThey’ve received over 230,000 H-1B visas approvals and over 100,000 permanent labor certifications. That’s hundreds of thousands of jobs that were taken from American workers,” Sonderling said.
That’s not how that works. If they wanted to take those jobs from Americans, they’d just open an office in that country… and probably save a lot of money doing so.
Americans either didn’t want or didn’t qualify for these jobs, no employer goes through the visa process to stick it to Americans, it’s a giant pain in the ass.

Technology@lemmy.world•Creative Industries Have Been Eviscerated by AI, Data Shows: "One of the worst stretches for media employment in modern US history."English
1·19 days agoI feel like the more I use AI at work, the more I feel like it’s replacing the things I actually enjoy doing, leaving me with the leftovers.
I’m a manager over 5 infra devs, I’ve been pretty strongly against AI since the beginning, but the company has pushed it hard and gave us a “all you can use, see what you can do with it” mandate. It’s hard to push back, so the best I can do is add team wide guardrails. Some things I’ve noticed:
Pros: - we're able to work on more things simultaneously. - deployment velocity is way faster - team members have become less siloed and more full stack - people are able use AI to do more in depth analysis - more new issues found and ticketed Cons: - less personal ownership - more time spent pushing back on AI answers (or not and going down time wasting rabbit holes) - more pressure to do more and invent the "next big thing" instead of focusing on what we already know needs doing - first step of problem solving is to ask Claude, not actually think about the issue or why it's happening - less true understanding of how things work together or with different pieces actually do - more duplication of work - more "Well Claude said" instead of "I found that" - less "how do I solve ___" instead "How can I get Claude to solve ___" - way more huge comments in code, but not readable or human understandable comments. Same with documentation and PR/Commit messages. And personally, I feel a lot less motivated and like I now have to manage 5 people and 20 extra entry-level/intern level people. I feel pressured by those around me and above me to do more and I have less time… and I feel way less respected, challenged, appreciated, and get no positive dopamine hit from solving issues or getting things done.
AI is likely one of the biggest brain-drain’s ever to hit the industry and it has sapped all of the enjoyment out of my job.
As much as I want to use AI to move my home lab projects forward, I want to enjoy it… and vibe coding my hobby is a great way to make it no longer my hobby, just like it sapped all of the love out of my job. So the lab sits there because I’m mentally drained at the end of the day, and pissed off at the political and technological directions of my hobby.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the worst part about getting older that young people don't know about?
1·3 months agoYeah, I meant it both ways.
1.) What you choose to do and what you decide isn’t worth your time gets seems to get increasingly a more important choice to make.
2.) You also start to realize “I’m not here forever, I should get off my ass and do that thing I’ve always wanted to do. I’m not getting any younger.”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the worst part about getting older that young people don't know about?
0·4 months agoYou start to realize there’s only a finite amount of time left and start having to choose what you’re going to start based on what you’ll be able to finish and what you could have spent your finite time on instead of.
Also loved ones and close friends passing away is hard, but the state before that… getting ill and their health going downhill… no longer able to be the person you grew up with. It’s mentally rough.
Finally, your body no longer being able to cash the check your mind wants to write.

Just what we need!
