  • See, none of these would likely be an issue, if there wasn’t also an additional $300 cleaning fee attached.

Would I do the dishes, even, if I knew there was a $300 cleaning fee? Nope. Same with stripping the beds. Have the cleaner that is supposed to come through after each turnover, and handle it. That’s what that cleaning fee is for, isn’t it?

Regardless, I don’t care about the parasites having to figure out how to solve the issue. I’ll sleep just fine. Is it more expensive because it’s some tucked away cabin? Yep. But, like anyone who chooses to operated a business in such a location, that’s a problem for them to solve, and I, again, do not care about their business problems.

  • Clearly then we are talking about different things.

Probably. I’m talking about the actual, current landscape of AirBnB, not “What I envision it should be”.

There’s onsie-twosie listings like what used to be there, of course. The vast majority, however, are not. They are just investment properties. Running essentially a hotel, without the regulations covering hotels.

If it’s a discussion about airbnb in particular I think the only acceptable thing at this point is to not use it.

Agreed. I do feel for the people who are still trying to use it as a “i’m out for the month, let me rent my space out” or “I have a spare bedroom”, and hope something crops up like a housing coop or something.

  • The thing is, the vast majority of Air BnB listings are not just someone looking for a temp roommate. They are investment properties, operated like hotels, without the amenities of hotels, but with all the non-personal service of hotels.

When I stay at a hotel, I don’t have to clean the room, strip the sheets, and do laundry. Housekeeping does all of that.

The same applies to Air BnBs now, and the hosts have nobody to blame but themselves.

And it’s correct, hosts don’t have to charge a cleaning fee. Most do, and come with a chorebook that if you don’t do them, they charge you even more. On top of the 3x what it would cost to stay in a hotel.

So yeah, if you’re charging $300 as a cleaning fee, I’ll be damned if I’m cleaning the unit myself.
