  • Another thorny legal issue for republicans:

Do the “human rights” of black slaves trump the property rights of their owners? And how are you supposed to protect your economic rights other than by beating the shit out of them?

Do the “privacy rights” of guests and tenants trump the property rights of their landlords? And how are you supposed to protect your economic rights other than by recording their every move on your property?

It’s basically the same fucking question. And it’s such a thorny and contentious one finding a balance must be hard.

Because in a sane society, basic human rights clearly do not have precedence over any other rights, right?

  • Sounds lovely, until you and the employer stop being on the same page about the tiniest of things.

Then it starts spiraling into a personal housing security crisis.

And you can forget about thinking of changing jobs any time soon. The moment your 2 weeks end, you’re homeless.

The tenant and labour union stuff sounds nice, but they’re not a magical fix. They can and often are bought and controled. While better than the alternative, they’re not a guarantee of protectedness.

This doesn’t mean the model is dead on arrival. It’s just not one I’d choose. I’d rather have a seperate boss and landlord, thank you very much.

    Not necessarily.

I remember this very good charging cable from a premium phone I bought way back when. Truly felt premium in the hands with a matte finish and soft to the touch.

Lo and behold, after 6 months of regular use the cable started staining, and cleaning only made worse. Then after a year it frayed. 6 more months and I’m sure it would have looked like the one in the picture.

Moral of the story: there are good and bad products in all price categories and no, not every single product design is foolproof. No matter how universal and genericized the category it’s in is, as innovation sometimes also breaks stuff.

Bad stuff’s also on the market.

  • though I’m not sure I’d call it discrimination.

It most definitely is discrimination. Because discrimination is “treating two things differently according to a discriminator”. Such as living alone or with a registered partner.

Now, the purpose of this is obvious (having a child is expensive and a good thing in the state’s eyes). Such cases where the discrimination “makes sense” (as it evens the playing field isntead of skewing it further) is usually termed as “positive” discrimination.

But as it technically fits the core requirement of discrimination, it is discrimination.
