Every time you go trough the purchase loop you affirm the habbit of buying from them. So it was not a high priority, they probably only added it for good pr.

This is why you have to purchase games that are free instead of just adding them to your library.

It works on enough people to establish a future bussiness model. Epic game store runs on a loss. Backed by enough money to keep losing till they believe to have caught a big enough base to turn it around, stop giving handouts and jack up the prices.

  • Maybe in some perspective but could not be further from mine.

All non personal Informations should be free.

Code is just information, who is one person to tell me i cannot arrange letters and words in a certain order because they did it first.

In context, i was already firmly opposed to the concept of copyright long before llms became consumer accesible. Imitation is the greatest honor someone csn receive.

I often get a question about “means to live”when i mention that. In short i think all people deserve the means to live comfortably regardless of economic output or labor.

I dont propose to change the current system overnight though, i would need to write a couple of books to fully explain the gradual transformation to the zero profit society i envision.

I have no issue with people correctly pointing out that the Democrats are fascist cause they are.

I do take note with how much louder these voices always seem to be leading up to an election where a 2 party system guarantees that no third party can win peacefully.

While i recognise that revolutions are fought with blood, if civil war breaks out i would still prefer a democrat in charge of the institutional violence and not Trump, even if only because a current day Democrat may have more geopolitical incentives to not openly murder too many citizens. While Trump would pee his diaper in exitement to believe he has a reason to nuke american cities.

  • My subjective opinion is that yeah it is unethical, but not more then so many other things we normalised.

Systematicly slaughtering animals for meat for example.

I am not a vegitarian by any means. You cannot fight on all fronts at once and have to pick your own battles in context of your own lifes challenges.

Cars poison the air and kill many people, i dont drive a car for that reason because thats a fight i can fight. I have sensativities with food, so i am not cutting out meat. (I aim to do so some day)

I moved to linux some years ago by getting help from an llm which requires datacenters build by malicious companies. I don’t have a google or meta account and my cloud and media is hosted locally on recycled hardware. Where for others those services require datacenters build by malicious companies.

Life is various shades of grey.

Definitely a good point if if doesn’t actually need to be plastic, i highly prefer natural materials overall. But thats not always practical.

I dont get the “someone elses problem” though. If the item is still perfectly usable then why would the next owner not also just want to use it? I personally value a hand me down that “served” my family for ages over “new thing”

If it is broken then it can get a new life by getting recycled.

Under current consumerism the pattern is that shit breaks and you buy it new, which causes us to psychologicly devalue the item (and thus materials) as it ages, i believe this is why so many plastics end up non recycled.

If items where durable, reliable, repairable. People will be more capable to perceive their value and be more concious about what happens to it after it breaks because losing it will hurt. Not quite like but somewhat similar to how we care about what happens to remains after death.

Also things being repairable increases the awareness of the materials because your working with them.

Supposedly greenpeace calls it “the poison plastic” and “the most enviromentally damaging plastic”

Gonna have to ask them for their scientific sources.

Personally i think plastics are fine if the product is actually durable. I take good care of my things. My 15 year old ipad mini is practically mint and if it wasnt for “making it more enviromental” i would still be using its original cable also.

  • Almost anyone can cut and paste a face on a different body using a classic photo editor.

It still takes a profesional to do it in a way that delivers a quality result.

Linus Torvalds is a professional, the linux terminal is his baby, if we can trust anyone on this, its him.

The amateurs using ai to produce slop that resembles what we perceive as quality, is sometimes hard to tell but 25 years ago people though half life 1 looked insanely realistic and that graphics could not possibly look any more real. Over time our brains will adapt and we will be able to tell slop from real work in a heartbeat. I bet most people here can already tell if a mail was written by an llm and not audited by a human with ease.

And give up the opportunity to get applause for planned obedience? That is not how you capitalism.

Its quite telling that ever since apple got forced to use usb-c the quality of their cables made a huge leap. It’s almost like the availability of competing cables is good for innovation or something.

  • I think your being a little to zoom in on the technicalities of modern day ai to tell the trees from the forest.

I am a bundle of connected neurons, effectively a neural network, i can calculate just fine.

Humans are “in general” horrible at doing math but thats besides the point of being capable of it.

Modern humans have a calculator in their pocket and we use it as a tool to make our own conclusions. Like ways “current day” ai often has acces to a calculator tool to do the same. Sure this is not ai doing the actual math but in practice its the same as a human with a calculator.

But the topic at hand is not even about current day ai but about hypotethical future ai that “somehow” is trusted enough to pull the plug on machines that keep a sick human alive.

Such future ai. If it would ever exist would have acces to such tools, possibly more complex tools to calculate odds of survival using (hopefully) a formula with a great number of input variables to consider all kinds of situations.

I would imagine such to be a known formula that humans could also independantly measure and calculate ending in a % chance of a survival. But somehow in this hypothetical future this would be a job given to ai.

So the question is less can ai solve math and more can we trust ai to interptet humam measuring tools to then put those values in a known formula tool to then act appropriatly on the results of said tool, and not at any point misalign/hallucinate.
