  • BBC will be able to recover their costs from him

In an academic sense, yes, but more likely is that he stalls and appeals and leverages every excuse his job offers him and every weasel word in the Rules of Civil Procedure, and then drops the suit at the last possible moment before there’s an order, and then appeals any claim for attorney’s fees because it was dropped due to some fig-leaf explanation and not because it was without merit.

Eventually the BBC walks away vindicated in the eyes of anyone paying attention, and maybe with some settlement of their own, but almost certainly not made whole and their speech is at least somewhat chilled because they have to be good custodians of their budget, just as was always intended.

Maybe I’m jaded, but litigation with a ratfuck is ratfuck business. It can be a worthwhile investment if you have something other than money at stake, but it’s inherently wasteful and awful.

  • The brief order did not detail its legal reasoning. Justice Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas would have allowed the policy to be enforced as the lawsuit played out in lower courts.

Jesus, these two don’t even pretend anymore. The prison healthcare system was (mal)functioning already without the new guidance. The new guidance will do something that an interested party says will harm them. You don’t change things until you settle the question. Knowing this fuckin’ court, it’s just a matter of time until MAGA gets what it wants here, but Thomas and Alito already know best, apparently.

  • Just to clarify why the anti-vax idiot was for this trial, it was going to withhold the known effective and safe vaccine from the control group for six weeks to see what happens, without even checking if any mothers tested positive prenatally. Due to limited resources, Guinea-Bissau has been slow to enforce their new guidance to align with other countries and administer the vaccine to all newborns.

It was basically leveraging the fact that the test subjects lived in a poor country to do something they’d never be allowed to do in a richer country, even MAHA’s America.

  • Dada Center, LOL.

Anyway, on the one hand, fuck 'em. On the other, extracting community value from any industry is the only way it can possibly work, and data centers don’t provide long-term employment in any reasonable number, so it needs to be taxes and other more direct aid.

The local residents and their governments “just” (that word’s doing a lot of heavy lifting, I know) need to hold them over a barrel until they get enough to truly make it worthwhile. Making the tech industry pay their fair share would also suppress the number of datacenters down to what actually matches the realistic demand estimates. What we’re seeing right now is undercapitalized bullshit trying to externalize the costs and retain the profits.

Easy to say, hard to do so, so I guess what it comes down to is this: fuck 'em.

  • Not the commenter you responded to, but while you’re absolutely right that it’s not just Greek System men, they are in a unique position where they have a certain amount of historic and administrative power, sometimes have their houses as part of the campus, have collective resources even beyond their individual school, have a demonstrated culture of circling the wagons, have power over the social and living situation of their members, and also take literal oaths of secrecy and brotherhood. It’s taking the same toxic masculinity that all young men are learning to deal with, and building a fortress around it.

The Greeks need to go, or at least have as much of that pared away as possible, starting with the special treatment by and access to the campuses’ levers of power.

  • If you want to do a little harm mitigation in your American convenience store shopping, Wawa is owned 40%-50% by its associates via an ESOP plan. QuikTrip is generally rated as an excellent place to work and their founding family seems to be not nearly as toxic. 7-Eleven is at least wholly owned by what used to be their Japanese subsidiary. Finally, Circle K was bought out by Couche-Tard, a Canadian company. If you’re on a road trip, by all means stop into Buc-cee’s for the bathrooms, as that’s an obvious loss leader and you get to literally piss on them.
