Our household is still doing a full American boycott, or at least as much as we realistically can. No buying US groceries, no Amazon, we cancelled all our streaming things and certainly no US travel.
And every time I hear complaints from the US about how their liquor industry is suffering or whatever… good! Their president keeps talking shit about us, deliberately tries to fuck our economy up and continually threatens to invade us. Until they get rid of that asshole and do many other things to fix their shit, I don’t care if they all go broke and I hope everyone else keeps it up as well.
Vegas had cool shows and entertainment. I miss Penn and Teller, and the short flight was nice. Vegas had some nice desert hikes.
But here I am in Japan downing a bowl of ichiran ramen and planning a walk through the torii gates tomorrow. The yen is pretty cheap right now too.
(Well not NOW now, it’s 4am)
The USA ain’t worth the effort or the risk, and they don’t respect us.
No shit, Sherlock.

No really, don’t come here, even for work. They’re putting everybody in camps to meet their insane arrest quotas.
A state election going Democrat doesn’t make me want to visit the GOP controlled USA which threatens Canada, so this is irrelevant. Also CAD is 66 cents currently.
Also CAD is 66 cents currently.
This is irrelevant. Historically, Canadians would go to the US even with this exchange rate. This is not a major driving issue. Yes, there would be lower cross border traffic because of exchange rate, but not like this.
To call attention to the exchange rate as an issue, gives them coverage that the problem is the exchange rate, not their extremely fucking awful attitudes/policies/abuses and evils.
The exchange rate may matter more to people when everything is already more expensive than it used to be.
That would be true if it stopped Canadians from traveling. It has not.
Canadians are traveling less to the US.
I only spoke for myself in that comment. The exchange rate matters to me.
More than the fascism does?
Given that was the throwaway line of the comment, that’s a rather uncharitable read of it. I love the purity checks though guys, really cool and meaningful dialogue.
In the theoretical reality where the USA isn’t my enemy and I hit my head with a hammer enough times to find gambling appealing, my money being only worth 2/3rds would give me pause going to nickle and diming land. Apparently that doesn’t give gamblers pause I’ve just learned, so fair enough. I’d need to hit my head with a hammer longer than I thought in order to meet the intellectual capacity of the average Canadian who visits Las Vegas in any context. I’ll keep that in mind going forward.
I agree with you on the uncharitable read and the purity checks.
I don’t agree about the exchange rate being a throwaway though. The reason is the number of idiot talking heads going on US news and telling Americans that the reason we are not visiting is the exchange rate. So many of them are desperately clinging to it as the reason, because it absolves them of the responsibility for voting for a pudding brained numptyfuck. It’s why you see offers of discounts or Canadian money at par in a desperate attempt to draw Canadians.
They need to understand the consequences of their actions. I’ll give you a specific example. Derek Stevens, CEO of several Las Vegas casinos was crowing about how he knows the exchange rate is why Canadians are not going there, so he offered CAD at par with USD. You don’t have to look hard to find videos of Derek Stevens saying how great Trump is and chanting with Trump in one of his casinos, “USA USA”. We can’t let him let himself off the hook for his support of an imbecile with the economic understanding of a turnip.
I don’t consume their news media in a way where I was even aware of this narrative, so the reactions to my comment make more sense now thanks for the follow up.
Edit: I did know about other tourist states and their media blaming tariffs instead of the 51st state threats, but not the exchange rate thing.
I keep a close eye on their media cesspool for one simple reason: you have to know your fucking enemy. It’s sickening to watch, but you need to know what lies the bastards are telling themselves.
That’s why I refuse to give them an inch of wiggle room.
The whole “it’s just the weak Canadian dollar” narrative is pure, cowardly cope. It’s an easy out for corporate bootlickers like Derek Stevens and every other MAGA-cheering sycophant who wants to suck off Trump with “USA USA” chants, threaten Canada’s sovereignty like we’re a target for annexation, and then act completely mystified when we stop handing them our cash.
They want to pretend it’s about simple math because admitting reality means facing the fact that their vile, unhinged fascist circus made them a fucking pariah. Throwing out “CAD at par” coupons won’t wash the stench off. They chose to vote for a braindead, corrupt bully, they cheered on the hostility against us, and now they want to cry about currency rates when the consequences kick in?
Fuck that. They made their bed, and they can choke on their empty hotel rooms and hemorrhaging tourism numbers until the point finally punches through their thick skulls.
Las Vegas can’t die fast enough in my book…
Great.
I wouldn’t go even if I was offered a free trip all expenses paid.
It’s gaudy, fake, ugly, unsustainable and stupid.
Even without all the fascism, it’s still the worst. It’s gaudy, fake, ugly, unsustainable and stupid.
Apparently it used to be relatively cheap, so people put up with those things. I wonder if Vegas will survive the price hikes.
Vegas used to be the land of free stuff to reduce all barriers to gambling and keep you around gaming: free parking, free drinks, free shows. Rooms were cheaper than you’d expect because it was subsidized by the gambling. All of that is gone now.
I think they are convinced they can survive on milking rich idiots. I don’t think it makes sense from a scale perspective. Vegas always builds way too big because they never want to turn away gamblers due to lack of space. But it’s really expensive to cool and maintain enormous spaces.
Either they try to appeal to the common man again or they go down.
I think they are convinced they can survive on milking rich idiots.
They can. Sure their staff will get laid off but the rich people will still keep placing bets in large enough numbers that the house stays afloat. Fact of the matter is that rich people struggle to get dopamine hits and gambling large quantities of money is one of the few things they have left. There’s a comedy called Rat Race that illustrates
Vast majority of sporting events and entertainment is funded by gambling and alcohol unfortunately.
The house will definitely get smaller, have less employees, and a higher buy in… but the gambling industry will persist.
It’s gaudy, fake, ugly, unsustainable and stupid.
And those are it’s best features…
It’s gaudy, fake, ugly, unsustainable and stupid.
Are you talking about the U.S. President?
haven’t ever gone, really not interested, tbh.
There is literally so much Canada to explore?
I have personally passed up a trip to Vegas over US nonsense this last year.
Maybe because it’s insanely expensive to go to Vegas now?
Also, getting interrogated at the border? not to mention, maga.
No, because it’s full of Americans.
Even up in New England there are almost zero Canadian license plates on cars. I’ve seen maybe 2-3 in the past couple weeks.
It was a shit hole at the best of times.
Went once, that was enough.
Went to see O (eau) by the Cirque du Soleil . Fantastic show.
Don’t know how gamble. I was not comfy on the street vs pickpockets. The rest of the trip wasn’t as whizbang, but it was still a nice trip.
Canadians refusing to be insulted by nothing more than a pedophile plus the smartphone gambling apps were bound to take it’s toll. I read a while back that LV is only catering to the whales now and are doing better than ever. I guess that news story was wrong.
Thanks Canada! I’m sure it will help.
