From March 2022 to July 2026, European Union countries paid Russia around €197 billion or approximately US$209 billion for fossil fuels.

Just keep offering up kibbles in the palm of your hand to the wolf hellbent on eating you, that is definitely going to work out for you Europe!

That doesn’t seem to include uranium imports.
Do you know how those developed?

      Although it doesn’t change your conclusion : typo ? not 1.2 * 10e6 but … *10e9 (€) ? (from your ref. : … )

The EU was the fourth-largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels, accounting for just under 8% (EUR 1.2 bn) of Russia’s export revenues from the top five importers in August.

I can’t help but feel like this article is subtly trying to justify Trump’s decision to buy Russian diesel (that Russia is actually important from Iran) to try to convince people he’s doing something (buying half-a-day’s supply of diesel) to lower prices before the midterms.

I am quite confident that that is not Ukrainian Pravda’s goal. That’d be very much not in their interests.

that Russia is actually important importing from Iran

Is what I think you meant to say. And yeah, it is unbelievable and should be insulting that in order to mitigate the fallout of the myopic decision to wage war against their adversary they indirectly support them.

Not freezing is, too. Most of Europe is not prepared for a winter without Russian gas. We need electrification and renewable energy production yesterday.

It will have to in the future. There won’t be fossil gas and oil forever. What can’t be substituted has to be synthesized at some point.

ofcourse, but it’s a process that takes decades, not 2 years. and fossil fuels aren’t gonna run out tomorrow, there are generations of exploatation still in front of us.

How much less is that yoy and since the start of the war? You can’t expect rapid disconnection of complex resource economy dependencies or integration. Europe needs other options for energy Canada can be part of that, so can alternate energy. EU is limited in their fossil fuel acquisition options as the alternatives are almost all sea delivery.

Does anyone actually believe that EU could just cut all imports from Russia? We (EU) have been heavily dependent on energy from Russia for a long time and shifting away from this not something done over night. The important thing is to look at how much Russian energy has been cut out of EU usage, and then we have to make sure that continues until we, hopefully, reach zero within not too long time.

The fact that the EU is still importing some energy from Russia should not be a reason for others to start to import from Russia.

I don’t think it’s the EU buying Russian energy though, I think it’s particular EU countries buying Russian energy, like Orban’s Hungary did.

War always happens in a political context and the political context must be two faced otherwise how could something be allowed to happen that makes every single individual it touches put their life into doing what they perceive will make it stop?

Nature does not know extinction; all it knows is transformation. Everything science has taught me, and continues to teach me, strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after death. — Wernher Von Braun

There are a lot of reasons Pynchon put this quote at the beginning of Gravity’s Rainbow (the vast majority of them secular) and one of them that is easily missed is to function as a darkly humorous and existentialist critique of the idea there can truly be a righteous side in war or that the enemy generals ever really “lose”.
