I’m able to turn into metal, specifically steel. My skin can fully turn into steel i’m also bulletproof and durable. I have super strength, and my max limit is 700 tons, though I can fly up to Mach 195. I also have super speed when running, and my top speed is Mach 195.

Am I overpowered?

  • I think what folks have missed in both threads is that if the character already knows their top speed is X, then it means they’ve survived it at least once. Else they wouldn’t know their top speed is higher than what a real-world object could survive.

This points to a high probability that any character rated to go that fast has some kind of secondary power that protects them when moving at speed. OP specificed Marvel, so let’s pretend both that the speed force doesn’t exist and that there’s no Marvel equivalent cooked up for this character.

Canonball has a protective field when he’s using his power. Aurora and Northstar have canon speeds high enough that they never try to go as fast as they can because they’re not sure how much damage they might take, buys are sure what kind of damage they’d leave in their wake. Quicksilver has a canon record of mach 1280, and suffers no damage from it.

What we can take away from this other than writers and editors being who decide what limits there are, is that the Marvel universe, 616 and otherwise, includes speedsters that can exceed mach 195 without dying or burning up. As such, there’s no reason to conclude that OP’s OP OC wouldn’t have some kind of similar protection. It’s akin to spidey being able to throw punches that crumple steel and shatter stone, but having no damage other than bruised or bloody knuckles. Unless stated otherwise, the Marvel default is that if a character has a feat, they have whatever protection they need to reach it without suffering more than minor damage.

Now, is OP OP? Not by Marvel standards, no. It’s basically Colossus and Quicksilver’s bastard child. Certainly a dangerous character, but completely beatable by dozens of heroes and villains, including less popular ones.

Ignoring the question of whether you are OP’d or not, if you were in steel form and decided to fly or run anywhere near your topspeed, there would be wild physical side effects. You would vaporize yourself due to compression and friction from atmospheric density. Also, you would generate highly destructive shockwaves as well. Something to consider outside of the OP question.

It’s also roughly twice the escape velocity of the solar system (well. when leaving from earth.), so if they even manage to survive it… because this is Marvel we’re talking about… they would be on a very lonely trip to another star.

Just to clarify, Mach 25 is roughly orbital flight. (The shuttle would begin its breaking turns at Mach 24, on the edge of the atmosphere where sound is the slowest.)

So, if by “overpowered” you mean “sound like someone who skipped middle school science.” Then That’s definitely a yes.

Just as a side note, do you know what happens When large meteorites crash into the atmosphere?

They explode from the pressure and extremely intense atmosphere heating. And that’s at around Mach 20… (which, is why the shuttle does the breaking turns where it’s not so bad…)

Even if you had some magical way to survive that… The air and everything around you would also be exploding. violently.

The basic math here is that the mach number is one’s current velocity divided by the speed of sound- at your current conditions. Which makes it bad as a measure of “top speed” because it varies with pressure. Generally, as one ascends, the mach number increases.

For comparison, at sea level, mach 195 would be about 238,875 kph. The escape velocity of the solar system, leaving earth, is roughly is 151,200 kph.
