  • Yeah like there are definitely some drag shows you shouldn’t take your kids to but there’s also movies and concerts you shouldn’t take your kids to. There’s even kids horror movies vs the obvious r rated adult stuff. If they’re old enough to know boys and girls are different they’re old enough to understand that sometimes people do other shit for fun the same as they’re able to watch fucking Casper and experiment with the idea of death. It’s just a fucking genre.

  • Well and sometimes control is good, right? Like if it’s an apartment building where the units are owned by the tenants or condos or even row houses it helps to have an established self governed organization of some kind to keep ground rules for shared walls / roofs at the very least. And even in fully separate housing it can help if there are shared community areas like a clubhouse, pool, playground, etc. There are two main problems though:

First of all, self governance requires active participation of at least most but ideally all members. You run into that same problem with any kind of self governance and that’s how even very good things like unions can get a bad reputation. If you don’t actively participate in union discussions they can easily be corrupted and wind up as an even more insidious control tactic by the employer.

The second problem is specific to the history of HOAs in the United States. The concept itself was fundamentally started as a way to discourage racially integrated residential areas, then extended to discourage other types of minorities. Yes you see HOAs focusing on petty things like door color but more importantly you’ll see them pushing other, more insidious restrictions. When you place restrictions on outdoor decorations you’re often restricting specific religious and cultural traditions. If you’re only allowed to put up lights within a certain window surrounding Christmas, you’re pressuring people to not observe holidays with light displays that occur at other times of the year. When you restrict the amount of unmarried adults in a house you’re pushing out poor people who need roommates and and cultures that live generationally, as well as homosexuals in areas where they’re not allowed to get married / claim marital privileges.

So while there are some practical benefits, the history of HOAs requires highly active and intentional participation from everyone involved to overcome the dark history of the concept and there are very few situations in which that’s worth it, especially in a community where the houses are not physically connected.

  • Oh no it gets flung around plenty in on-unit report and with your work besties. Some of it is commiseration about unpleasant patients, but it’s also practically helpful to describe the background to float nurses or nurses new to the unit that the patient has some kind of long running problem whether it’s financial or cognitive-emotional that’s preventing them from managing their problems properly outpatient. But when you go to write that practical concept (of a patient who has a stable and predictable hospital course with a treatment plan that evolves minimally over multiple hospitalizations) you write “known to us.”

  • The thing about misandry is that like 80% of it is stuff men need to help each other with. They barely listen to women to begin with, they’re not going to suddenly start when women tell them it’s important to express their emotions and talk about their feelings (I’ve tried). Men need to build their own mental health movements by working on themselves using the research / evidence based practices that already exist then model healthy behavior for other men and grow that movement from there. Men’s mental health isn’t going to start with dumping more of their emotions on women because having a romantic relationship be the only way they’re comfortable with emotional intimacy was the problem to begin with. But redpill just wants women to fix it and blames them when they don’t.

  • Mine was an abandoned mall with half the lights dead and people shambling around aimlessly. There was a guy sitting by a door with a curtain on it and he asked if I would go in and help him with some math problems. Seemed sus as hell but I was kinda curious so I peeked behind the curtain and it was just a black void no floor or anything. Wished him luck and went back towards the lobby. There was a giant upside down cross on the wall and I was like oh hey it’s the cross of St Peter and everybody turned to me suddenly looking really pissed off and then I woke up.

The sleep paralysis moment was just a shadow man standing at the foot of the bed until I managed to yell for my husband and it disappeared when he ran in.

More recently I ran out of clonidine and had a dream I was being stalked by a weird blurry outline of a human. When it finally caught me I felt this vibrating stiffness go through me like being lowkey electrocuted so like not as painful but rather alarming at which point I woke up. Bizarrely, my immediate thought was to force myself back to sleep and go fight the asshole and I did exactly that and kept chasing it down and grabbing it and holding on as long and as hard as I could and getting shocked awake repeatedly. I must have done that 3-5 times before I stopped being able to find it. I remember my jaw being a little sore from grinding my teeth.

I’m also pretty sure I saw my actual death at some point. I got stopped at a traffic checkpoint during some kind of mass exodus by highway from somewhere. We were told we tested positive for some kind of infectious disease and I remember knowing that was a ruse but they were armed. They took us all to a sports stadium and once everybody was there (100 people or so?) they told us we needed to get in line to get on some trucks that were gonna take us to a more long-term housing situation. Once they had us in line on the field they started shooting and that’s when I woke up. At least part of the reason I haven’t tried to kill myself again is the distinct impression that if I try to evade that fate something way worse will happen.
