Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Quebec's strategic maple syrup reserve running dry amid high demandEnglish
8·19 hours agoAll farmers complain about the weather, but maple syrup farmers complain the most. They only get a few weeks and the weather has to be perfect. A couple hot days early in the season can screw everything up.
TVs were hugely dangerous in the early days. People used to get electrocuted all the time. They had hugely high voltage and exploded sometimes.
I lost the gas cap for one. The guy at the parts store laughed at me when I asked for a gas cap for a Mercedes, then he looked through the book said “Oh” and grabbed one from the shelf that had five of them on it. It’s the same cap as tractors use.

3·2 days agoHahaha! It’s a date! You won’t have any problems with the windows, it’s a lot like making a quilt or something. We need a sewing machine operator community!

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If someone could make a hair trimmer that could 3d scan your head well enough to give you a taper on the edges, how much would you pay?

It only works if you can bring your block list with you. That’s the only thing of value attached to my profile.

12·3 days agoIf you were thinking the bird would be wearing a diving helmet, you are not alone. I feel ripped of that it’s a submarine.

3·3 days agoI was talking with a guy that does canvas in Ontario a few years ago haha.
That could have been me LOL! I’m in Ontario, although I do know a few others. Canvas isn’t as scary as everyone thinks, really, but maybe that’s just because I know all the tricks. It’s funny because I look at sail making as a black art! But if you know how to operate a sewing machine you’ve got the tough part down. It’s the pattern making that really makes or breaks the job. And if you copy an old thing then you might be building off the other guys mistakes. The best advice I can give you in making a dodger is make a garbage one first. Make it out of bedsheets or any old cloth. You’ll learn so much and get an understanding of all the parts and how they fit together and the second will be 50x better. Nobody heeds that advice but it’s true.
Anyway, let’s meet back here in a few years so we can relive this experience again and again!

16·4 days agoHey wow! I make marine canvas and enclosures! I can’t believe there’s another sewer on lemmy, let alone another marine industry professional! Hello!
That is all information I don’t need in my day to day existence, you missed the part about cut/sew I guess. If I did need it I’d use metric because it’s good for that. For my needs measuring things on the table or around the house inches work better for me. My point was if there was a common reference between systems we could speak between them, but my original point was that if you say you like inches around here you’ll never hear the end of it from lemmy. QED.
This exactly proves my point again. I like imperial. I like factors of 8 and 12. I don’t want factors of 10, in my occupation in a cut/sew shop I don’t find it as useful.
If a metre was a yard we could talk between the systems. We could use the preffered system for the application. If someone said 2.5 meters, because I know my twelve times table, I would understand instantly that it’s 90" or 7 1/2 feet. I honestly have no clue how many feet are in a mile, I use kilometers for that.
Ya, to me anyway.
On the other hand if you say you prefer inches to centimeters you’ll get piled on. I’m Canadian btw but inches suit my needs.
If only they’d have made a metre equal a yard…
-thanks for proving my point lemmy.
Good thing there’s no reposts on lemmy.
