  • Old people come from a time where everything was a thing. Everybody watched the same exact shit on TV. Everyone saw the same movies. If anything was anything it was because everyone knew about it. Or if they didnt know about it, someone they knew knew about it

Old people cannot comprehend a world in which media is a trove of infinite niche and hardly anyone knows about the exact same set of 12 things that happened this week

So they see a random meme and wonder why anyone would know it exists without being a thing they missed somehow

  • Right now a gallon of regular gas in the same area is about $4.75. My ICE car gets about 35mpg on average (although I do have to run premium, not regular). So yeah, less than $1 cheaper to operate for the same distance. At least off of the highway. On the highway, the ICE car still wins because electric cars dont see efficiency gains the same way during different methods of use unless they have regenerative braking. So while my ICE gets 35 mpg average, Im easily breaking 60mpg on the highway. But the electric probably does far better in the city stopping constantly since its regenerating every time it brakes. Maybe it evens out, but I think the ICE is still probably overall a bit less expensive when solely looking at cost of energy consumption vs milage. At least assuming that someone is primarily driving on the highway out of traffic rather than in traffic or in the city

Charging prices probably dont fluctuate quite as intensely as gas prices, but ultimately the energy market is the energy market so theyre both going to rise with the tide in the general sense.

The real savings advantage that an electric car has is in the simplicity of the parts and less regular maintenance needs. But that is pretty easily blown out of the water by the initial purchase price. An EV would be 3x what I paid for my ICE, and the lifetime maintenance isnt going to be on the order of $40k+. No matter what you buy youre getting screwed somewhere, you just get to pick the hole.

Unless we start seeing $20k MSRP EVs in the US they really arent more affordable than ICE cars by any means

  • I dont think that in the 60s-90s anyone would have necessarily anticipated the existence of smartphones as they are now. Rather than it being a “deliberate” choice not to have them in the show. Its just not a futuristic idea of communication that existed at the time. Theres not smartphones in The Jetsons either. Earlier ideas of what the future would be like were a lot more utopian than the dystopian hellscape induced by smartphones and social media. Their various ideas of the future were a modification of the way people actually lived then, which was simultaneously less connected but also more interpersonally social. They dreamed of a more connected future, but not one where that level of connection would rip apart established social fabrics
