Sometimes you need to take a look at a hive from a Linux machine.

5·2 days agoIt’s not bullshit. I deal with the repair and engineering side of 1/8” phone jacks and they’re fucking stupid ass miniaturized versions of designs from 70 years ago that have to maintain mechanical backwards compatibility with several profiles and conductor arrangements, literally cannot be reliably implemented in a high IP way, cost a bunch, are worse to clean than even usbc and provide a very high leverage thing to torque on your board as well as necessitate additional pcb space for the dac and its power conditioning, shielding and other stuff.
And people who like 1/8” will just buy a dongle anyway.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Help me choose my 2nd (Dual boot) Linux distro on my PC as a Linux beginner
2·2 days agoThe problem the op is having is solved with the nvidia drivers. The most common (and nvidia supported!) method of installing them on their distribution is to install the nvidia drivers through the apt repository some other nvidia supported way. In the case there is a problem with a driver update, there is a higher chance someone will document and explain a resolution to that hypothetical problem based on the normal apt installation of nvidia drivers in a format that the op will find when they go looking for a solution on the internet.
Their capacity to run the two photo and video editing programs is something they’ll have to figure out no matter what they do and they said as much in their op, but the nvidia drivers fix the other problem and the apt repo or some other nvidia supported method of installing them is the appropriate suggestion.
Gaming on flatpack just adds another layer of complexity to a system the op already doesn’t understand how to use.

3·3 days agoAll the subscription models that were primarily chatbots before have first party agentic harnesses now so more people have had positive experiences that they want to share.
I’d either go with a Debian derivative (or Debian) or a red hat derivative (or red hat). Or suse I guess.
At a time like this it would be bad to approve of or recommend some weirdo mess. Just crawl on board one of the big boats till the waves die down a bit.
The food inflation isn’t evenly distributed across all groceries. I hit $6 a day with little snacks and workout oriented meals with greater caloric content and higher Q factor in a bunch of different ways.
If you want to bring down your own grocery bill and go from zero to sixty on cooking at home I can’t recommend that book highly enough. You don’t have to suffer.
E: oh yeah, the book title and premise are based on 2015 prices too.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are you supposed to say to someone who believes climate change is real but won't accept that human activity contributes to it?
1·5 days agoNothing. You benefit more from having someone who will help you plan and prepare for the effects of climate change than you do from having someone who agrees with you about the causes.
The reason for that is you and your comrade can’t do anything impactful about the human sources of climate change.
Good and cheap is a free cookbook based on the food stamp budget of $4 per day. It’s a free pdf from many sources including the authors website if you sign up for a newsletter or something and paper copies are very inexpensive.
You can, maybe, have you actually imported or exported all of your passkeys before?
The concern is that in order to solve a technical problem, trusting the user, a system of actions and technologies called remote attestation was added to the passkey design. It allows for the service being authenticated into to figure out if it even wants to accept the supposed users attempt. One way remote attestation can be done is by client. Not using a client the service accepts? No way in even if you have the right credentials!
This is really powerful technology that lets me ensure my own services won’t even allow connection to insecure clients or just clients I don’t wanna talk to.
But of course we’re not talking about me using passkeys to gate access to my own services I control, we’re talking about Google, Microsoft and Apple doing it. So built into the passkey standard is the capacity for the service to simply stop allowing you to access it with a passkey if you don’t have the right thingy (or any other suite of remote attestation technologies, client is just one example).
Do you know if your passkeys do this? Do you know how to get in to your accounts if passkeys are suddenly not working?
People are mostly afraid of lock in, control, etc here but the real problem is that most users don’t understand how passkeys work. How can you comply with a regime of passkey use if you don’t know how they work?
It’s even more apropos that the fediverse behaves unpredictably when uploading images.
Passkeys in a nutshell: how does it work? Idk. Who’s in control of it? Idk.
I wasn’t able to see the image because it’s an avif. What a weird format and choice of format.
Apropos of a discussion about over complicated unpredictable passkey behavior.
It’s funny because I can’t see it and when I view the code of your post and copy/paste it into the location bar I get the broken jpeg picture.
Yeah the technology is cool but I stay away from passkeys and tell people not to use them because there’s too much room to permanently screw up.
Maybe they’ll remove the non portable type from the spec or roll it into an enterprise equivalent like with ad.
Even in that case we need to hope they’re using ai tools because they’ll be seeing a volume of cases too high for their previous workflow.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Chromecast (the device) is dead, what can I use now?
31·8 days agoEh, the op said it doesn’t have to be perfect in their last paragraph.
I find a lot of the people on this board don’t really understand what privacy is and instead just don’t want to be advertised to.
How about posting alongside a… friend?
No. It’s not practical.
No matter how you feel about ai or how you think it is wrong, the increased tempo of bug fixes and security patches necessitates either manpower beyond what is feasible for volunteer projects or the use of ai tools.
It’s an arms race and you can’t opt out without just missing the patch schedule.

I do that kind of dumb crap all the time because restoring a workbench machine is a pain in the ass and I’d prefer to not surface a foreign hive to it.
