Laughless Saint absolutely has its own identity. You can obviously see and feel the Elder Scrolls influence, but it’s different enough to be its own thing. It has somewhat gothic vibes to it, there are no elves but there are “beast-people” like lizards bears and cats, and there are non-playable beast races like frog-people turtle-people and crab-people. The lore is also quite different from Elder Scrolls, but does feel pretty “Shivering Isles”-ish which imo helps in its favor. The combat is more like Skyrim however, so you’re not relying on invisible “dice rolls” for your hits to land, but there’s no dual-wielding and you have to actively switch to your magic like in Morrowind. There are also minimal loading screens, as the entire world is loaded in from the start and there are no “interior cells” so it’s all seamless exploration; you can go from where you first get control of your character and explore pretty much every inch of the island without coming across another loading screen. There’s no fast travel or quest markers on by default, but there are settings to toggle those on if you’d like them.
The story basically goes: you share a dream that calls you to the island along with every other sentient being on the island. Most people are a little strange at best, and some are downright crazy. There’s a “Saint” that calls people in that dream to come to the island and set them free, but no one knows the true nature of what it is.
Tainted Grail is fun and very dark. It’s built less around making yourself as powerful as possible and more experiencing the story of a crumbling Camelot, but you can still make yourself ridiculously OP. Like I said before, they keep adding free DLC that add new unique weapons and armor, new fighting styles and spells, and I think there have been a few quests added as well. I haven’t played the main DLC “Sanctuary of Sarras,” but I’d really like to because I really like “Old Ones”-themed stuff.
