Progenitor of the Weird Knife Wednesday feature column. Is “column” the right word?

I make knives now, too. Why not buy one at flightlessforge.com?

  • I think it’s more likely that silicon foundries are reallocating their production time towards making datacenter hardware because at this particular moment in history that prints money. Or, possibly, prints fairie gold since most of what’s been “bought” is contracts on future production of product that hasn’t even been manufactured yet, using money that investors are probably going to want back pretty soon now.

    We can hope, anyway.

In the meantime I’ve submitted this for warranty replacement with Sandisk, as it allegedly has a “lifetime” warranty, and I await with interest the variety of cockamamie excuses they’ll surely come up with to try to weasel out of giving me a new one.

  • I worked for a place that did this, i.e. added a delivery surcharge which the house kept. I discovered that this is, in fact, illegal in my state unless it is disclosed in writing. Which it wasn’t.

When we had a new point of sale system installed, as our restaurant’s resident tech person I naturally adjusted the such that were were in compliance with the law and delivery surcharges were pooled with the employees’ tips.

    The owner never noticed.

  • I have served in the industry. This is exactly the rationale. I heard this one all the time: “But this isn’t our forever home. We’re only going to be in this house 20, maybe 25 more years. What if the new buyers don’t like it??? We have to make the safe choice.”

No statement. Only grey. Never mind that all four of those craptastic Frigidaire appliances in the picture will be scrap within six years anyway, if not less.

  • Location, location, location. Be somewhere that has lax or absent laws enabling foreign entities to prosecute you for this sort of thing and has no extradition treaty with Japan and/or the US. And remain anonymous and avoid identification. This guy was a reddit mod and lived in friggin’ Arizona, both of which were bad moves on his part. So I imagine Nintendo or the courts subpoenaed reddit for everything they had on the guy and they eagerly complied.

If you lived in, say, Cambodia and only distributed your stuff through decentralized or anonymized channels and did not seek fame or fortune for yourself it’s pretty likely nobody would actually be able to bring the hammer down on you for it.

  • That, and I dunno. The older I get the more I start to agree that maybe lots of motherfuckers really shouldn’t be trusted with technology.

The Brotherhood’s original intentions were more or less sound, it’s just that like with all religious and quasi-religious organizations the internal power structure and rituals eventually became more important than the mission, and as everyone kind of went whackadoodle as a result the whole thing rather went off the rails.
