Technology@lemmy.world•The AI Data Center Boom Is Causing a Gigantic Spike in Smog-Spewing Gas Power Plants: "These facilities could lock America into decades of continued fossil fuel dependence."English
471·1 day agoWe were promised a frictionless, intelligent future. Instead we’re building gas plants so a chatbot can confidently invent court cases and recommend glue on pizza. Apparently the cloud was just a smokestack with better branding. Big Tech gets the profits, everyone else gets the asthma.

Technology@lemmy.world•Conflict in the Red Sea is forcing cloud giants to find a new route for the internet: Google, Meta, and Microsoft are said to be securing expensive land routes.English
161·2 days agoTrump’s war with Iran has given the world a fascinating new infrastructure strategy: route the internet around the mess Washington helped create. Apparently »America First« now means American tech companies paying extra to keep Europe and Asia online. The cloud has never looked so dependent on one man’s foreign policy tantrums.

Technology@lemmy.world•Not just AI. China is building technologies that challenge U.S. dominance: From batteries and solar panels to drones and satellites, China is building tech capabilities that extend well beyond AI.English
481·2 days agoAnd the irony is that China has moved far beyond copying Western technology. It’s now a global leader in research output, including fundamental research in materials science, chemistry, and physics. The West outsourced manufacturing, underestimated the transfer of expertise, and somehow assumed China would remain the world’s assembly line forever. That assumption aged spectacularly badly.

Technology@lemmy.world•Not just AI. China is building technologies that challenge U.S. dominance: From batteries and solar panels to drones and satellites, China is building tech capabilities that extend well beyond AI.English
731·2 days agoAbsolutely, outsourcing manufacturing gave China a massive head start. But the West also outsourced decades of expertise, supply chains, and industrial know how while congratulating itself on becoming a service economy. China didn’t just inherit factories: it invested, learned, innovated, and built an industrial ecosystem. We handed them the starting line, not the finish line.

Technology@lemmy.world•Not just AI. China is building technologies that challenge U.S. dominance: From batteries and solar panels to drones and satellites, China is building tech capabilities that extend well beyond AI.English
1253·2 days agoThe US is busy figuring out how to charge a monthly subscription for an AI that summarizes emails. China is making the batteries, solar panels, and drones everyone actually needs. At some point Silicon Valley will announce a breakthrough: a chatbot that explains why manufacturing moved overseas.

Technology@lemmy.world•Mac Users Are Nuking Every Trace of Apple AI on Their Machines: Sayonara useless AI features, and hello disk space.English
1436·2 days agoApple used to brag that its products just work. Now your expensive Mac comes with a bloated AI experiment you didn’t request, can’t fully remove, and are expected to thank Tim Cook for. When customers start writing tools to delete your flagship feature, that’s not innovation.

Technology@lemmy.world•Walmart Running Into Trouble as Its Super-Expensive Robots Can’t Handle the Realities of Warehouse Work: It's an automation "arms race."English
1513·2 days agoWalmart spent billions replacing warehouse workers with robots, only to discover the robots can’t lift dog food and the engineers cost more than the workers did. Apparently the automation revolution has reached its greatest technical challenge yet: doing the job it was supposed to automate. Somewhere, a PowerPoint deck is quietly being deleted.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Bubble Teetering on the Brink as OpenAI Admits to Massive Financial Failure: A $20 billion setback.English
6·3 days agoPersonally, I use older, smaller models, provided they are adequate for the task at hand. My theory is that at least 80% of companies are using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Not only is that incredibly expensive, but it’s also incredibly ignorant.

Technology@lemmy.world•Mainstream News Anchors Now Talking About the AI Bubble Bursting at Any Moment: "I think the entire AI boom is investing in the wrong future."English
1162·3 days agoThe funniest part is that the thing that could actually make AI useful at scale might be what wrecks the investment thesis: cheap, local, open weight models. Wall Street funded a trillion dollar server farm to discover that sometimes the answer is a smaller model running on your laptop. The technology might win while the investors lose. Nevertheless, companies such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft – as well as Nvidia and AMD – are a very long way from simply going under.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Bubble Teetering on the Brink as OpenAI Admits to Massive Financial Failure: A $20 billion setback.English
5·3 days agoExactly. And cheap open weight AI is the wildcard. If people can run capable OWAI locally for pennies, the trillion dollar moat starts looking like a very expensive puddle. AI could thrive while the companies betting on permanent scarcity discover they funded their own competition.

Europe@feddit.org•Canada, Japan, six European states say unwavering support for International Criminal Court, regret on US sanctions while former ICC judge Navi Pillay wins 2026 Nobel Peace PrizeEnglish
1·3 days agoTrump loves talking about law and order, right up until international law threatens to hold powerful people accountable. Then suddenly the judges become the problem. Sanctioning the ICC while demanding everyone else respect American rules is quite the spectacle: apparently justice is sacred, provided Washington gets to decide who deserves it.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Bubble Teetering on the Brink as OpenAI Admits to Massive Financial Failure: A $20 billion setback.English
4·3 days agoExactly. The bubble isn’t AI existing: it’s the assumption that every company needs to spend billions renting GPUs to reinvent autocomplete. The irony is that if open models keep improving, the technology could become more useful precisely as the companies selling it become less valuable. Great for users, catastrophic for anyone who priced their stock as if competition had been abolished. - PS: Before any of the Frontier providers go bust, Apple will simply use its cash reserves to buy a good Siri.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Bubble Teetering on the Brink as OpenAI Admits to Massive Financial Failure: A $20 billion setback.English
101·3 days agoThe funniest part is that the dot com crash didn’t kill the internet. It killed a lot of terrible business plans. AI may follow the same script: useful tools survive, investors discover that a chatbot isn’t worth infinite money, and taxpayers get stuck with the data center power bill. The technology can be real while the valuation is pure casino. - PS: You didn’t mention the smartphone. And that’s exactly what people mainly use these days.

Technology@lemmy.world•Senate Investigation Challenges Big Tech’s Case for AI Data Centers: “Congress must hold Big Tech accountable so these companies pay their fair share.”English
5·3 days agoBig Tech calls AI data centers an economic boom. The Senate investigation suggests a different business model: privatize the profits, socialize the electricity bills, collect tax breaks, and make everyone sign NDAs. A 100 MW facility may power through the equivalent of 100,000 homes while creating about 100 permanent jobs. That’s not a jobs program: it’s a subsidy program with servers.

Technology@lemmy.world•OpenAI Wargaming Response in Case of Public Revolt After Catastrophic AI Disaster: Everything's on the table.English
10·4 days agoOpenAI is reportedly running war games for a public uprising after an AI catastrophe. Nothing says »we’re building technology for humanity« quite like rehearsing what to do when humanity shows up furious at your door. Apparently the contingency plan for losing public trust is to prepare for the public, rather than stop giving them reasons to distrust you.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Bubble Teetering on the Brink as OpenAI Admits to Massive Financial Failure: A $20 billion setback.English
12·4 days agoOpenAI promised investors an AI gold rush. Now its projected annual revenue is reportedly $20 billion below earlier expectations. That’s not a rounding error: that’s an entire business empire missing from the spreadsheet. Silicon Valley keeps calling it a revolution, but increasingly it looks like a trillion dollar game of musical chairs, with investors hoping the music never stops.

Technology@lemmy.world•Don’t Want to Spend Time With Your Kids? Train an AI Voice Model of Yourself to Read Them Bedtime Stories: Parent-child bonding time isn't so sacred that it can't be optimized with AI.English
1·4 days agoBig Tech spent years designing platforms that steal our attention, then sold us AI tools to compensate for the time we lost. Now apparently even spending time with your kids is inefficient. The endgame is becoming obvious: humans do the work, AI gets the attention, and Silicon Valley collects the subscription fees. Apparently being a parent is just another productivity bottleneck.

Apparently the solution to public outrage over Flock cameras is to replace them with a system that connects every camera, drone, dispatch call, and sensor into one giant police dashboard. Brilliant. We complained about Big Brother watching us, so they gave him a second monitor and a searchable archive.
