hate makes people feel strong, so people love to hate on stuff.

fuck that buzzword of “innovation”, it’s just corpo-talk.
and also fuck the personality cult around habeck. haven’t we learned nothing from history? no personality-cults.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•$1.8 trillion was wiped out from the US stock market yesterday, where did it go?
1·15 hours agoIt’s more like money borrows value from the future.
how so?
what would you say is “screwing them over the most” in the past few decades?
nuclear energy only contributed about 10% of the total energy consumption of germany though.
the default place, aka. USA
central valley
USA?
£120 food
that is … very low? i spend 300€ on food each month
also what is “175 council tax”?
also damn, “900 mortgage” (for 2 people) each month? that’s surprisingly affordable.

35·1 day agobecause it was never real. Market cap is not the same as cash
btw cash is no more real than company shares. both are paper and numbers in a database.

53·1 day agonowhere, the total amount of money in the world is zero. one man’s dollar is another man’s debt. if somebody loses money, somebody else loses debt, so the net sum is still zero.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why aren't people outraged about convenience pricing?
1·1 day agofyi tourists go to cafes and pay 4€ for a coffee. meanwhile i grab mine from the supermarket which costs 0,80€
it is possible to pay less; people just don’t care.
did you know: plastic is a glass, and so is butter.
every action that does not have a commercial purpose is inherently sexual, and therefore any such activity that is not allowed by the other person is sexual harassment.
however, you cannot ask another person what they are fine with because asking is in itself an activity and therefore potentially sexual harassment. so you’d have to ask the person first whether you can ask them …

Technology@lemmy.world•Solar Panels Are Now Producing So Much Power That They’re Leaving Nuclear Plants in the Dust: "Solar is now the engine of the power transition."English
1·5 days agobatteries haven’t been built in the past because they weren’t needed, but they’re being built today (look up sodium-ion batteries) and they’re cheap and effective.

2·5 days agobtw the reason why denmark and germany are building so many wind turbines is mostly because they’re so far north.

1·5 days agosee my other reply in this thread
basically it doesn’t move the moon closer, but it makes the Earth rotate slower. that’s where the energy comes from.
basically the tides transfer angular momentum from the Earth to the moon.

1·5 days agoactually, the moon gains angular momentum from the tidal movement that it causes, and that’s what makes it move further away. the reason is that it takes Earth about 1 day to rotate once around its axis, but it takes the moon 28 days to rotate once around Earth’s axis. so Earth has a higher angular velocity, and the tidal movement tries to reduce that difference to make the two tidally locked eventually. ironically, this process transfers angular momentum to the moon (to speed it up), which makes it move further away and thus the angular velocity actually decreases. yeah, orbital mechanics is weird.
(btw this is not a joke. it’s really that way, difficult to comprehend i know).

6·5 days agobtw geothermal does not come from the earth’s rotation. it mostly comes from nuclear decay of heavy isotopes in the earth’s interior and the enormous heat capacity of the earth’s interior, which means it’s still warm from the friction heat from when the planet first formed. in other words it’s there since the Earth formed, independent of the sun.
also there’s another (practically accessible) form of energy that comes neither from geothermal nor from the sun: you can pull energy out of the tidal movement that comes from the moon’s changing gravity field as it orbits around our planet. i think that one’s not really being used though because the only way to really utilize it is to build dams across havens and important shipping routes and that interferes with trade, which is considered the more economically valuable activity from the two.

at that speed, the plane would have been completely vaporized just from the atmospheric friction alone.
