I spotted a Doctorow reader in the wild!

I snapshot my machine, set it to go overnight, went to bed. Woke up, 24% done “Do you want to use the package maintainer’s version?”. Grr. Went smooth though.

My gut reaction was to say, “What did we ever do to you?” But then I answered it myself. But still, I don’t want rats. The whole “Rat-Free Alberta” thing is a bit of a myth. Saw one in North Calgary a few years ago.

Imagine if ads were related to the content of the page? Like, if I look up a webpage about video games, and get ads for… Video Games? I made the mistake of looking up a particular eGPU a while ago, and now when I’m looking up kayaks online, I get ads for eGPUs.

So update!
Drove by the theatre to see. Twenty or so protesters out front, lots of Palestine flags. Loud, drums, hard to miss.
Got a text from someone who went at intermission. Apparently, someone started yelling halfway through the first Act about Palestine and the genocide, and evaded security long enough to totally disrupt the show.

Hi! Spammers often dupe a real number for a bit, then change it up. My wife’s office was the spammer’s number for a day. They got a day of getting hundreds of “I’m reporting you to the police” and “go eff yourselves” calls, and then the spammer’s moved on. The receptionist got a gift card from management for dealing with it.

The Cyberiad, by Stanislaw Lem. Haven’t read it since I was a kid, but remember it was awesome.

I installed a lot of Nokia fiber switches. They were all right. Never came with issues, stood up to decent abuse. Pricey, though.

I had a coworker with no hands. I noticed right away. I did fail to notice he also had no feet for about a year though. I probably shouldn’t have blurted out “You have no feet?” Really loud when I finally did notice. He did a really good “Holy cow, where’s my feet go?!” though.

They say because he disrupted the performance, but we’ll never know. I can tell you that crowd… Probably not super receptive.

I landed on Fedora Gnome as my default choice unless I have a reason to go other. My wife finally stuck with Linux after trying Mint, Ubuntu, Pop, and Ubuntu Mate, then landing on Fedora KDE. (When I say trying, I mean me trying to get her to use it and then her abandoning the machine for Windows.) Fedora KDE stuck.

So, I’ve been going since… 1990. I’ve got tickets for this Saturday. Not sure what to do. Maybe go, then wait till his replacement goes to bow and just yell “Free Palestine” really loud? Maybe ask for my money back? Cancel my season tickets? Legit torn.

My immediate supervisor at work knows how bad I get earworms, and does Baby Shark whenever I annoy him. It’s in there now, thanks to this.

Yeah, I know enough too, but I worry about the sneaky details I don’t know.

So, word of caution. Be careful. I tried using Copilot to open a connection for a single port between two LANs on my network in pfsense, as I didn’t know pfsense. It happily recommended opening 0.0.0.0/0 on the first LAN’s gateway address. It worked!.. By opening everything on the whole network up to anything at all. The problem with AI: you can only use it if you already know enough to catch its horrible screw ups.
Paywalled for me.

Exactly this. Not dropping 70K for an electric vehicle that was designed to crap out after 5 years.
Corey Doctorow is a writer who does SciFi and tech/privacy activism. He works with/for the EFF, and he’s anti AI, but in a fairly nuanced way. You’d have to read his stuff to get a sense of it. Very opinionated, very prolific. Fun to read.
