  • I fall into the “no free will” camp. I don’t think people should get a free pass, however. The goal should be rehabilitation and prevention.

If any punishment is involved, it should not be anything beyond what is most likely to correct the behavior and/or discourage others from engaging in the problematic behavior… if we can even agree on what is considered problematic behavior.

Figuring out the rehabilitation and deterrence is also hard, and we’re usually just happy to punish in such as way as to minimize cost or maximize profit so… I doubt we’ll figure it out anytime soon. That and people’s egos can’t handle the whole “no free will” thing.

  • The fine for financial crimes needs to be in addition to whatever profit was made from the crime.

The problem - the greater, potentially insurmountable problem - is… corruption and dishonesty.

If you use a term like “profit”, then they’ll find another way to move money around and categorize it as something else that doesn’t qualify. Many huge companies already pay little to no taxes this way. If they can find ways to lower their tax burden, they can find ways around most things. It will not always happen, but given time I’m sure someone will innovate faster than law can keep up.

The end result will ultimately be auditors or auditing… which if not purely independent can be corrupted. This can come from the company, if they are hiring auditors or self reporting, by whatever authority is in charge of auditing, or by the powers that be starving the auditors of resources which is exactly what has happened to the IRS and US tax system.

  • Americana’s will only do shit that doesn’t inconvenience them.

For some, sure. For others I think a good part of it is the fear of doing shit that will negatively impact others like them.

I am in a position of privilege and can afford the inconveniences, but what effective act could I take that wouldn’t result in making the lives of numerous other people tip out of balance and potentially cause them or their dependents to become unhoused or go without food or medicine?

For the average person, living has become more and more precarious. We have fewer and fewer safety nets and the rich are quick to make those they have power over feel the pain of resistance first. We have no guarantee of healthcare, less and less food assistance, unaffordable childcare, poor elder care. All purposely done by the capitalist class. This has created a human shield around them.

It’s like the only options are indirectly accelerationist. Cause unavoidable collateral damage, blame those at the top, and hope it inspires those at the bottom to act instead of turn on you? I don’t like that.

  • In a world where there is no accountability for the powerful, and in a country where this fact is blatantly advertised and bragged about by the powerful, there is no reason to trust.

This is my biggest concern about the way things have been going. Without reasonable laws and consequences for breaking them, society will basically just collapse into “might makes right.” The rich and powerful have that might and use it openly to take more wealth and power for themselves leaving everyone else with less and less. Without a base level of financial stability for the average person, more and more people will grift and cheat and lie, trying to survive and support their loved ones.

We really need to come together and fight back but those in power know just the right things to say to keep us divided.

  • Are you telling me that a human sending form messages is in any way comparable to an LLM sending messages?

What matters is that humans used to be involved. Now they just review the results at some point. You are evaluated, chosen, further evaluated, informed, and given answers to questions you might have about a job and the company offering it all by the LLM. Everything that might theoretically be handled by agents saves the company money and let’s them cast a wider net.

Then you’ll be end up working as a reverse centaur for some rich kid’s startup. Sure, you can spend exponentially more time than the company does verifying things or ignoring, filtering through junk… but if you are desperate, unemployed, hopeful…

    Theoretically, at least.

  • How long has it been since you were recruited? I avoid LinkedIn, but I’ve never needed to look for work because my dad knew a guy and I proved competent when that got my foot in the door.

Still, from what I have heard in the last year or so it has become, at least in part, a cesspool of scams and disingenuous employers wasting your time in their search for cheaper labor… both often powered by LLMs.

  • Because of the way they our political system is set up, and the laws and regulations that surround political spending, money is everything to a party politician even if it isn’t.

As a politician, your party controls everything. They control what committees you sit on, whether or not the rest of the party will vote for something you work on, whether or not you will receive any financial assistance (or opposition) in your primary or general campaign.

What determines your status in the party? How much money you contribute to them via fundraisers. What’s a great, efficient way to raise funds for your party? Fucking over the population by catering to the rich.

That’s what I’m saying. This is why campaign finance laws and regulations need to change. It’s extremely difficult to do anything, even if you get elected, when you don’t have any power.
